Hi forgetting the cost differences does anyone have thoughts on which program is better? My son has a direct admit to all three. We live in NY. He also got into U of Maryland not a direct admit tho and would have to transfer into engineering. Of the three direct admits do any jump out as the front runner? Thanks. We are very confused!!
I don’t know much about those particular schools. But I do think your decision to ignore U of Maryland and concentrate on the direct admits makes sense. Typically your own state flagship is a reasonable decision, if it seems a good fit for the student.
My first instinct is that if you are in NY then SUNY Buffalo makes a ton of sense. Does your S have a preference? Is one school a better fit for whatever he is looking for in his college expereince? What is the cost difference (I would not ignore that – he can use any savings to do things like study abroad one summer etc.)?
Unless there are no cost differences, I would not dismiss them. There might be differences in the programs, but at what cost is very important to the decision, especially if borrowing money. @happy1 makes a great point. That money can be used for other things, or invested, and gifted later. That’s not to say cheapest is best, just that there is an opportunity cost.
I just wanted to see if there were big standouts without considering the cost. Or if they are all considered on the same level so to speak.
SUNY Buffalo Engineering is ranked and it comparable to Maryland. I would put them both on top of the list. SUNY would be cheaper (id expect)… Uconn would be ahead of UVM in my list
I didn’t think Buffalo was comparable to Maryland. We did admitted students day at Maryland. Doing the other three shortly too. Hopefully it will be clearer after that.
Both Buffalo and UConn will provide exposure to major employers like General Electric and UTC. Pick 'em but your own state school generally is best financially.
UVM is not known as an engineering school but an excellent Medical school so choosing between Buffalo & UConn is probably a better choice, unless your son is a big snowboarder/skier.
