Hi! I was accepted to U Mich for MS in Bioinformatics and Emory for Biostatistics.I am interested in both of the two fields while as an international student I know little about the details about the two schools and programs. So I am not sure about which program to choose now. Could you give me some suggestions or specific informations about the two programs and the two fields, such as the quality, career, and cities?
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
U Mich is a huge research institute, while Emory is a Liberal arts college. Both are very different. Michigan is very cold in the winter, but has a great campus life and things to do. I don’t know much about Emory, other than the fact that it is smaller. From my school, U Mich is a bit harder to get into.
The two campuses are like night and day in every way. Large versus small/medium, top tier sports program
versus, some would say, a modest division three program but that is arguably subjective. Weather can be brutal in Michigan but Atlanta is hardly tropical. No bad choice academically in my opinion. Good luck.
Michigan is indeed a huge research university, but I would not describe Emory as “small” or as a “LAC”. Emory has 15,000 students, 8,000 of which are undergrads. It has an annual research budget of $500,000,000. It qualifies as a mid-sized research university.
Both are excellent universities. I agree with the posters above. If cost is not a factor, I would go for fit, and since the OP is a graduate student, that should lean heavily on the program that most closely mirrors her interests.
I’d go with Emory. Both are great but I feel Emory provides the advantages of a research school (resources, faculty, etc) and a private liberal arts college (small class sizes, great financial aid, etc).
Plus the weather is nice and warm
