U Mich vs Wash U

Which is better for the social sciences? Especially psych, sociology and economics. I know Mich grad school is highly ranked in these areas but is this a good indicator of the quality of its undergrad programs?

Washington University is more selective, I think it is better. For things such as the humanities and social sciences, you should goto the higher overall ranked school. Your degree will be worth more.

Don't fall into the Washu trap, go to Michigan.

WashU is more selective, as NYao says, but if you'd like to go to the school with better social science programs, Michigan is the clear choice.

What do you mean by Wash U trap?...

WUSTL is the most overrated school ever. Go to Michigan.

The "WashU trap" is usually referring to the fact that they make a significant to boost their US News rankings, making them look much better than they actually are, but it has been successful in boosting applications. However, US news rankings still can't really make a school better (aside from the applicant pool). Therefore, they are pretty selective but still not as good of an educational institution as Michigan.

CC, Michigan's Social Science programs are all ranked in the top 10. In fact, most of them are ranked among the top 5 in the nation. But at the undergraduate level, rankings aren't everything and Washington University, although not ranked nearly as high, is a respected university. My advice would be for you to visit the two schools and get a feel for their overall environments. Then go with the school you feel more at home with.

my sister graduated from Michigan pre-med with a major in psych. She loved it, she enjoyed all her classes. The only thing about Michigan's psychology department is its size; its a very popular major so the general psych classes are rather big. My vote would be for Michigan, but either way both schools are tremendous and you're going to get a great education at either of the schools.
