Hello, i m currently a senior in high school. My interests have always been in sciences espeacially in chemistry. I want to do a lot research in college and hopfully become a researcher in the future. Fortunately, my mom's college has a tuition exchange program with 500+ colleges, among those i have choosed Connecticut College, University of Florida and USC. However i can only apply to 4 schools from the program. the 3 remaining colleges that i am interested are WPI,U of delaware and U of pittsburgh. I want to hear your opinions on which school is better for biochem/Chem E. Thank you

UDelaware has a great chemistry program, from what I've seen myself and heard from others. I seriously considered going there for chemistry. They make a big push for undergrads to do research. The department also has funding from the DuPont family, so it's got the money to back up its initiatives. (The campus is also quite pretty.) I don't know if they have a chemical engineering department, but if they do, I assume it must be equally good.

UPittsburgh would definitely be ranked lower than UDelaware for its chemistry, but I'm pretty sure I would've heard if it was terrible. I assume it's decent.

How would you compare UDelaware to the 3 colleges i have choosed?(conn, usc,UF)

WPI is excellent in the sciences and it is unique. And it maintains a high quality humanities department to give the students broad perspective. WPI grad do very well in placement in Engineering jobs and in graduate/medical school.

I'd go with UPitt. You can't beat what UPMC can do for you. Upitt Medical Center employs the most people in Pittsburgh and is famous nation-wide as well as world-wide for being a leader in med/sciences/etc. Upitt students may also take classes at CMU and participate in job fairs which lead to great careers in future reserach, grad school, or top companies like Loreal.

I'd go with Upitt because of its location, opportunities, UPMC, fun atmosphere, and strong academics in your field.

NIce, now i really can't decide. Three people have 3 different opinions. My mom want me to apply pitt because their accepance rate is high and close to home. So far i had conn college, USC, U delaware and Upitt. Another college in this program that i m strongly considering is Rose-hulman. I have heard their engineer program is at top for ugrad, but i don't know if they are good for biochemistry. My dream schools are caltech, mit type of schools. So if any of the above colleges are great for ugrad research oppurtunities, please let me know!

Don't panic!!! Just figure out what features at which school appeal to you most. Go visit WPI and see the labs. Undergraduate research is readily available, but you may be too busy working your tail off because of WPI's unique academic terms. Not semesters or quarters.

Why not Georgia Institute of Technology?

Here's some features that may be important to you.

Campus; classic New England looking campus at WPI
Diversity; not a large % of minorities at WPI but growing.
Women: few at WPI. Probably loads more at Pitt and Delaware
Sports; Pittsburgh is Div. I. WPI is small-time but big time in intramurals
Classes; small classes at WPI. State School size classes at Pitt. Delaware is probably in-between.

Frankly, I think they are all good schools. I would take the program that provides the lowest cost net of aid.

WPI is cool I live in Worcester and have a lot of friends who go there and love the sciences!

To windley: GA tech is not in the program.

All of those schools will award me full tuition if i got selected. Selecting rate for WPI is 60-90%, Pitt is 30%, Daleware is <10%. But i have to get in first before i can get considered for scholarship. I have a 780 math, 500ish verbal on SAT (english is not fisrt language) I took 3 subject tests, math2,chem and physics, i m expecting some good scores on those,750-800.
I don't think i have a problem to get into pitt (PA resident). But i m not really fimilar with the other 2 colleges. I have been moved a lot, so location doesn't really matter to me. So judging from pure academicly, which one is better? Thanks

To LakeWashington: Does WPI graduates get into good graduate programs? WPI gives me the impression that it is a school for engineers. But i m leaning towards biochem right now, CHem E is just a backup plan in case i got bored with biochem...

They ARE all great schools, but just to correct a misperception in post #2 - U pitt is ranked 57 in US News, and U Dell is ranked #67. I doubt their chemistry departments would rank much different than that.

BTW, my son is probably applying to all three of these schools too!

Have you looked at Case Western? Thatmight meet your needs.

Don't feel like you have to choose one of these now! Just get your applications done, do a good job on them, and decide once you have your offers in hand.

Youknowme, WPI is not simply engineering. The Biotechnology program is also popular there. And while WPI placement in the northeast is great, I suspect that with solid grades, you would find that a WPI degree would successfully get you into solid graduate programs or employment.

U of Delaware is good school. The campus is nice and good for out of state.
they are # 10 chemistry engineering.
