I'm a parent of a junior trying to figure out if she has any chance of getting into the school of education. She attends an extremely competitive private school (in-state), so her GPA is low (3.2). They don't issue class rank, but give enough data about average GPA's that she is in the middle of her class.

She'll have taken 4 AP classes (two history, French, and Calc A/B) by the time she's done.

We're expecting a 29 on her ACT. Does she have a chance to get in education? With her GPA, what would she need on the ACT to get in?

Her EC's are pretty good (athletics, model UN, service, etc.) and she can write an excellent essay.

Any advice on U of I's school of education would be appreciated.

Last year’s middle 50% range for education was ACT 25 - 28, class rank top 18%-6%, and that is typical for modern years. Having honors and APs help. A higher than range ACT can help a lower than range rank but be aware that less than 5% of all applicants accepted to the university last year were below the top 25% of their class (and they estimate rank if high school does not rank). Thus, UIUC would be a reach with her current class rank even with a higher than middle 50% range ACT score. However, as only a junior, she cannot know now what her rank will be at end of junior year and raising it will definitely help. Essays will be important, particularly for education to convince them you are serious about either elementary or special education. (Note, if you are talking about teaching particular subjects in junior or high school you do not apply for the education college but instead the LAS college in the particular major that you are considering teaching).

Drusba, thanks a ton; I was confused about why the education school didn’t have a secondary education major. Applying to LAS will make it even more unlikely unless the GPA really jumps.
