What are my chances of getting into College of Education and UIUC?

College of Education is one of the smallest at UIUC enrolling only about 150 new freshmen per year. It also has the lowest admit rate of all the UIUC colleges -- about 45% (university's overall admit rate is 68%). Its middle 50% is 24 to 28 ACT and top 14% to top 5% class rank. If you are in that middle 50% range you should have a good chance (you do not give class rank so cannot tell). If not, you can still potentially make it but should submit very good essays and EC's.

My class rank is top 21%...ugh
Should I apply to another school that is easier to get into, then change majors at a later date?
Thanks so much for the advice

Here are the middle 50% ranges for 2005 freshmen (order is college: ACT, SAT, class rank)

ACES (agri and env science): 24 - 28, 1110 - 1300, 72% - 91%
ALS (life sciences): 24 - 27, 1070 - 1270, 81% - 94%
AVI (aviation): 23 - 27, 1130 - 1240, 62% - 83%
BUS: 27 - 31, 1250 - 1390, 86% - 96%
EDU: 24 - 28, 1180 - 1310, 86% - 95%
ENG: 29 - 32, 1300 - 1450, 85% - 97%
FAA (fine arts): 25 - 29, 1170 - 1350, 74% - 94%
LAS (arts & sciences): 26 - 30, 1200 - 1390, 81% - 95%

You are in the 50% range only for ACES, aviation, and fine arts. The latter two have special admission requirements and it seems pointless to apply to ACES unless you actually intend to do one of its majors. Transfers from one college to another are generally subject to approval of the receiving college except that many junior transfers are almost automatic as long as you meet minimum GPA requirements for the transfer and have completed courses the college requires for transfer. You should note that if your intent is to teach at the high school level in math, science, English, language or social studies, your route is not through the college of education. Instead, you apply for admission to and go through LAS for your major and get a minor in secondary school teaching from the college of education which allows you to be certified as a secondary school teacher in your major. If your intent is to teach elementary, early childhood or special education, you need to be in the college of education either beginning as a freshman or via transfer later. In making the decision to which college to apply, you should be mindful that the 50% range is just that -- 25% of the admitted class is lower than that, so do not give up hope but also understand that you have a risk of rejection and should have applications into places other than UIUC where your chances for admission are safer.

"You are in the 50% range only for ACES, aviation, and fine arts. The latter two have special admission requirements "

what do you mean special admission reqs? i tried to PM you, but i think you have it turned off. sry for the thread hijack.

For the pilot programs you need to meet FAA minimum physical/health requirements. For all the studio and applied Fine Arts programs you need to demonstrate ability (portfolios, audition) and go through interviews.

OK, so now I am thinking I will apply to LAS. Just realized you have to go LAS if you want to be a secondary education major. My class rank falls in the middle range, but my ACT is still below. LAS is a bigger program, so I am assuming they will take more Freshman.

About 56% (a little over 4,000) of the enrolled freshman (about 7200)are LAS and it usually admits about 8,000 out of about 11,700 applicants (68% range). Note though that if your class rank is top 21%, you are a little below the usual middle 50% range for LAS (top 19% to 5%) not in it.

wow, which way to go..

College of education Where I fall in the middle 50% of ACTs, but below for class rank, and where they only take 150 Freshman

or

LAS where I fall below middle 50% in both ACT and Class rank, but they accept more students. (Still open to teaching either elementary ed or secondary ed)

suggestions? Thanks so much

I don't think the college of Edu only admits 150 freshman. I think they said they admit the same % as LAS only that they get a lot few apps so your chances are the same for LAS as Edu. Anyone hear differently

has anyone heard back for College of Edu yet? I'm still 'manual review required'

Have not heard yet. Mine still says "pending decision"

No not yet! The waiting is insane! Mine says "Deferred, manual review required" My high school doesn't rank so someone said that has to do with it plus I have pretty average scores I guess so they aren't high enough to be an 'automatic' admit. But I don't know anyone in the College of Education so I don't know how different they are from the other colleges and how many people they have admitted already. Did you end up applying to Education then? What do you know about it?
