So my daughter got into both for liberal arts, psychology. She may change majors so I think both schools have a broad enough depth of subject offerings if she does.
IU will be about 3-$5,000 more. Which you choose? She'll probably stay in the Chicago area. She also loved the IU campus, not so much U of I.
Thanks!

We have similar situation and need make a decision most likely between IU and UIUC. We are Illinois residents. Daughter is admitted to Kelly Business School and received the OOS $9000 automatic scholarship. She is also admitted to UI for Biology she applied, but not any merit-based scholarship from UI. She likes both campuses but cannot decide which major she likes more. Where to go? Any input would be apppreciated. Thanks.

I would say you cannot go wrong either way, it may come down to price and the campus intangibles. I just found out today that the prices listed on the U of I website are for 2010, not 2011, so IU may be closer in price than we think (we also got the $9,000) In addition, you can apply for other scholarships at IU whereas U of I has few. U of I, however, fixes their tuition, at least they have in the past, for 4 years. However, with the state in shambles financially, who knows?
On the other hand, U of I is a little closer for us and carries more “weight” in the rankings, FWIW.
Keep me updated.

Zini: UIUC has a really solid psychology program. But in that field, it’s all about post-grad work to be honest, so I’m not sure how much the rankings/quality really matter. But my roommate is a psych major and I took a psych class and had a great experience with it. The department definitely seems to have it together. Also, nothing has been said about tuition not being fixed anymore. I think that’s a positive draw that helps bring in top students, I doubt they’d get rid of that policy. If you run the numbers, you will find that even with the scholarship, IU will likely end up being more expensive if you factor in tuition increases.

Brite: Kelley > UIUC Biology… but if your daughter chooses UIUC with the intent to switch into the College of Business, know that nothing is a guarantee. It’s not the easiest thing to do. She would need to have a really solid GPA both semesters freshman year and have solid involvement, ideally in business-related orgs to show genuine interest. Lots of kids attempt this switch, but the school has a high retention rate so not as many spots open up as you’d hope. That being said, I am somewhat biased, but I chose UIUC College of Business over Kelley. In short, the connections here are incredibly strong and the focus on developing the students into professional human beings is unlike anything I’ve heard of or experienced.

Thanks for both of your inputs. I understand it is somewhat easier to compare the same program between two universities, but much harder or even make no sense to compare different majors betweeon the two universities. Since my daughter couldn’t decide what she really likes the most, she applied several majors among different universites, in the hope of having more choices. She probably should have applied for Business at UIUC too. It seems to be always easier to transfer from Business to other majors.

Is there someone filtering a message before it gets posted on the CC? I had several times of experence that my intended postings were lost and not shown here at all.

At most good state schools today business is a tough major to get into. I’d rate these two B schools very close. I prefer Bloomington over Chambana

barrons, thanks for your input. My feeling is IUB did a much better job reaching out students. UIUC does not always encourage in-state students to apply to it.

Not much competition in state really. Indiana has stiffer comp from Purdue. It is used to marketing itself.
