Just interested in thoughts on the College of Business and University of Illinois vs. Kelley School at Indiana Unviersity. I have already been accepted at Kelley with 9k/yr scholarship and have not been accepted at Illinois but expect to be accepted. Looking to major in finance and work in something finance related or consulting preferably in either Chicago, Minneapolis, or NYC. I do not live in either Illinois or Indiana. Which would YOU prefer mostly in terms of job placement, but also considering teaching quality, student life, and facilities.

My son chose Kelley over UIUC COB. We are from IL. Back in 2007, when he was deciding between the two, he visited both. IU was far more student-friendly from an admissions standpoint. UIUC’s attitude was more like, you should feel honored that we accepted you, and we don’t need do anything to win you over. The two attitudes were like night & day. Now, UIUC is supposedly courting OOS students because they pay a higher tuition, so they may be more welcoming than we experienced in 2007.

IU’s campus is much prettier. Also, basic infrastructure has suffered at all of the IL publics. The State of Indiana seems to put a higher budget priority on education. EVERYONE we dealt with at IU was friendly. Even though we were instate for UIUC, the cost of IU wasn’t that much more than UIUC after the scholarship money was applied. Being OOS, don’t expect much scholarship money from UIUC, if you are accepted.

Kelley’s I-Core semester sets it apart from most other universities. You can see the details on Kelley’s website. Academically, most of son’s business profs have been very good. Not sure if this is because he took mainly honors classes as a DA. Many of the teachers seem to go out of their way to make personal connections with their students.

IU has a career center devoted solely to their business students and, as a business student, you have to take two different career classes to graduate. The website offers details on the career center’s results.

Son has not complained about the facilities on-campus. However, I know there is a push on to renovate Kelley’s undergrad building.

The bottom line is that you need to pick a school that is a good fit for you. Visit both and see what you think.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate it.

Adding only slightly to the above post, when i visited Kelley in October they assured us that there would be a whole new additional business building by the time our class enters junior year at IU. On that topic, the UIUC CoB building is very nice, modern, and eco-friendly. I was highly impressed with it. I suspect the new Kelley building will be equally if not more impressive, but the downfall is that we would only have it for two years.

I will be choosing between UIUC CoB and Kelley this year too if I am admitted to UIUC on Dec. 11. I am an Illinois resident though, if that makes a difference.

A lot of people say IU has a better finance program then U of I. However, I was wondering why there is a difference in median starting salary for finance majors, U of I being 54,000 and IU 52000. Obviously it isnt all about money but it is something worth noting. Perhaps U of I CoB fairs better in Chicago.

20% of Kelley grads work their first job in Indiana, where the cost of living is considerably lower than Illinois, especially compared to Chicago. The Indiana salaries probably drag the average down a bit.

Finance is better at kelley, excellent program and opportunities, whatever part of finance it may be either investment banking or investment management, placement rate is excellent

what if you’re not sure what you want to do in business yet? I’m not sure if I will want to do accounting, finance, management, or any of that until I take those intro classes and see which ones appeal. Pros and cons of the two schools for undecided business majors?

My son also selected IU Kelley over UIUC and many other schools. We also live in ILL. My son loves IU.

Pros: all of business except accounting and risk management are better at IU (IU doesn’t offer risk management), and it is a lot cheaper.

Cons: if you decide not to do business it is not as good of a school, accounting isn’t as good (but IU still sends a huge porportion of accounting grads to big 4 positions), no risk management major.

Illinois is ranked much higher overall in both itself and its business school.

not its business school mvlc2010!!! check usnews again, its 13 while Kelley is 12!!!

yes i don’t think this thread would exist if the two business schools were not essentially equally well-ranked. we’re looking for more than that.
