U of M Honors Program

I was accepted to the University of Minnesota's College of Biological Sciences back in November. I was wondering if anyone has more information about the University Honors Program besides the limited information found on the UHP site. Mostly I'm curious about my chances of getting in. I'm ranked 10 of 370 in my class, have a 4.05 GPA and I got a 33 on my ACT. From what I've heard, I would easily be able to get into UHP if I had applied to another college, but I haven't heard any statistics from CBS students. Does anyone know anyone who got into UHP through CBS or what sort of students are normally accepted?

I’m a current freshman in UHP, and this past week actually I volunteered to call prospective students who had been accepted into the University Honors Program and the College of Liberal Arts. Although I was only calling CLA students, I had the opportunity to look at the other lists. Based on what I was told and what the lists looked like, I have reason to believe that UHP is done accepting prospective freshman into the program. If you haven’t already received an acceptance letter, I’m assuming that you will not be accepted. I could be wrong however. The woman who conducted our calling outreach said that the average honors student is in the top 3% of their class with a 32 on the ACT, but they also heavily consider your extracurricular activities and leadership experience. Your stats definitely look good in comparison with the averages, but I know because the College of Biological Sciences is a smaller college, it’s slightly more competitive to get into honors. Best of luck to you, and just remember that if you don’t get in as a freshman, you may apply after your first semester.

I just talked to the admissions, they said the majority of letters come in march about honors and scholarships? so idk.

I got a 32 on my ACT ranked 1/625 and participated in UMTYMP, and I got into the honors program like a month ago and a few weeks ago got scholarship info, but i do know of people who got in earlier. I think you have a great chance, my science ACT was 35 so maybe that helped. My application was filled with activities and leadership, but I do not think it was great. I applied to CBS as well and I think they just send stuff out in waves. Keep checking online, because you will know faster from there.

I’m a current honors freshman (CBS). I just did a quick search on old emails and found that I got into honors in early February (my app was complete in early November, and I was accepted mid-December). I would guess that if they aren’t done sending out invites yet, they will be soon. If you haven’t gotten a letter yet, I’m not sure that one is coming. But good luck, and I hope I’m wrong!

(My scholarship info arrived the second week in March, FYI.)

For the OP, I was admitted to CBS honors with a rank similar to yours (10/about 350) and slightly higher standardized test scores (SAT: 1550/1600, 2350/2400 – from what I’ve heard and read, the equivalent of a 35 or possibly a 36 on the ACT). My ECs blew, though, so that’s something to consider.

Also FYI, I know a lot of people harp on the fact that honors is now run by the UHP and is no longer run by individual colleges, but that doesn’t mean that all the best people get accepted to honors. Like someone said upthread, only a certain number can be accepted from each college – I know for CBS they try to invite enough that actual attendance will give them around 60 students. I know a couple of people in CEHD Honors whose stats were good, but not as good as some CBS students who weren’t accepted. So yes, it’s university-run, but there are all kinds of caps and quotas, and the fact is that some people just get screwed because they’re coming from a more competitive college.

I do know one person who get into the honors program and turned it down. IMO, a really bad decision. If Latin honors aren’t a big deal to you, and don’t seem worth the effort, then you can always drop out in later years. But in your first couple of years, when you’re taking pre-reqs, the honors option is really nice, and the bonus is that most professors curve honors classes to a B, rather than the C curve for normal classes, because of the GPA requirement to stay in UHP. So basically, if you get in, do it. It’s worth it.

Just some things to think about.

I got in, but I’m choosing Plan II at UT.

But I looked at UHP here and it honestly looked really amazing, I was completely deadset on going for the longest time. :)

Last year I got into Honors on April 1st or 2nd. Most everyone with similar stats as mine were notified months before that. Not sure why. I love the U and Carlson but I am not a great fan of the Honors program and the only benefit IMHO is you get to live in Middlebrook (a great hall by the way).

The honors program has its benefits, depending on your college and how you use it. It definitely won’t hurt you.

I might be misremembering this but I got my admissions decision over Thanksgiving, and they told me then I was in the honors program.

I had visited previously, and during my visit they had me meet with the honors program, so maybe that helped.

Some University Honors Program offers come out much later than offers of admission. I see examples of that every year among people I know locally.

The Honors Living and Learning Community (being together in Middlebrook) is one advantage, and I think advising is another. Ages ago, when I was an undergrad, the honors seminars were also very interesting classes.

I talked to CBS last week and was told that all Honors notifications had been sent out. CBS accepted students who were in the top 2 -3 % of their class and had an average ACT of 33.3. I did not get invited though I was accepted at Wash U and U of Rochester. I am in the top 5% with an ACT of 33 with at 35 in Science. CBS cannot accept that many into the Honors Programs. I had hoped that Honors would make the huge U of Minn a smaller place, but without that it looks like I would do better at a smaller school.

I also didnt get into the CBS honors either - and my ACT/Class ranks were about the same as above. But Fuzzled, you have to remember that CBS has a freshman class of 350, that alone makes it seem like a small school.

One thing to keep in mind is that if you are not accepted into honors as a prospective freshman, you can always apply again once you are at the U.
