Should I take SAT subject tests?
Thank you for reading, any criticism or tips would be wonderful
You should be fine even with the existing ACT. It would not hurt to re-take it though. A boost in your ACT would help you to qualify for the honors college which offers a lot of additional opportunities.
If you are looking at chemistry you may also consider chemical engineering, which has a significantly higher pay structure. CoE admission requirements are stricter, and a ACT boost would also help you there, you are on the low side for engineering.
@TooOld4School People have mentioned that to me in the past before about chemical engineering. Im not the best at math and I don’t really have that love for it. But thanks for the suggestion, i need to research that career path.
And thanks for telling me about that honors college, I haven’t heard about that until now.
Your math subscore indicates high proficiency in math. ChemE is not an easy major (nor is chemistry), I would not go down the ChemE path unless you really love it or are thinking about medical school and want a backup. It’s usually organic chemistry that is difficult but that is rarely a problem for majors.
You do not need to have taken Calculus in HS , Michigan has intro Calculus classes if you have not already taken them (not unusual).
@UNC115 There is no such thing as a “pre-med” major. You can major in anything and be pre-med. I have many friends who are pre-med, and although most choose majors like Biochem or BCN, or CMB - I know some that are doing BME, Evolutionary Anthropology, and even Business. Engineering majors provide good back-up careers (and you might even like it), but at the risk of killing your GPA for med school (which is very important). Business provides you with great alternate career options as well, but with little overlap with your med school pre-reqs. Interesting majors outside of standard majors most pre-med students opt for may require some planning and extra classes to finish the pre-reqs for Med School, but might make you a more desirable applicant for Med School (depending on the Med School).
@yikesyikesyikes I know there isn’t a pre med program for UMich, I was trying to say that I’m trying to major in chemistry or a related major that provides pre-reqs for medical school
Lucky you, to have such an outstanding state university system. The number of students from NY who attend or who wish they could attend a university in that system would fill plenty of greyhound buses-probably an entire fleet of them.
