U of R vs Emory

I got into both Emory and U of Rochester. Rochester offers me a 15k per year scholarship and Emory none. I would like to study premed or something close like biomedical. I am finding it hard to decide between the two. Would anyone like to share your perspective? Thank you!

I’m from Rochester so I can’t really comment on Emory but I have definitely heard a lot about U of R’s biomedical engineering program. Their Med Center is across the street and connected to Strong Hospital so they get a lot of hands on experience.

Emory has better weather though…

Also can’t comment on Emory since I know nothing about their pre-med program, but UR has a very good pre-med program. Strong advising starting freshman year. Excellent research opportunities. And the Med + Dental School is literally across the street from the River campus. The Charles Drew (Pre Med) Society is very active.

UR also has an excellent engineering school (bio-medical engineering) if you are more inclined in that direction.

Since you mention medical school as a possibility in your future, please take into consideration how much undergraduate debt would be wise. Med School is expensive! You really don’t want to start out in serious debt before borrowing another boatload of cash to finance professional school.

Agree with WayOutWestMom about not taking on debt if your goal is med school.

Bear in mind that there is no such major as ‘pre-med’. As long as you have the required coursework (i.e., math, inorg & orgo chem, bio, etc.), you can be from any major. So it is more important to look at school for what you are interested in. I do not know much about Emory U but for biomed engineering that you mentioned U of R is good. My son who is in optics and know a few biomed eng. major commented that it is one of the toughest major on campus, based on course- and workload.

Good luck with your decision.

…by “inorg” BandW actually means to say “Intro to Chem.” Inorganic chemistry is actually an advanced chemistry course for ChemEng/Chemistry majors, usually taken after your orgo class…just so you don’t get confused.

I agree with all of the above. UR has a superb BME department and pre-med advising is very good. All science courses are thorough and taught by top notch faculty (as this is a research university).

15K/year is HUGE! Unless Emory matches this, I would not even think of this as a tough decision. Unless, of course, you want the Atlanta weather ;)
