U. of Washington vs. Syracuse U. vs. Boston U.

I am Korean international student who got accepted to U. of Washington Seattle,
Syracuse U. , and Boston U. I am interested in studying international relations, law, political science, international affair, maybe......business? not sure.
Which school is the best school for these field of study?

Also, I find myself so obsessed with US news national college ranks, and according to the ranking, U. of Washington is the best. Is there huge difference between rank 42 school and rank 52?

Oh, and which school is the best in popularity wise?
and which school is the best in transferring to another school?

I can’t answer questions about these schools, but please – stop looking at rankings. Instead, do some research on the specific programs they offer for your specific interests. Which school fits you best? That’s all that matters.

Ask your questions here?

[Syracuse University - College Confidential](Syracuse University - College Confidential Forums)

[Boston University - College Confidential](Boston University - College Confidential Forums)

And your worrying about the difference between #42 and #52 is rather naive at best, stupid at worst.

I know it is so stupid…and I try not to think about rankings but the problem is my parents do and I just find it hard to convince them ranking doesn’t matter much. sigh*
thanks for your posts.

Congratulations! These are all good schools. I know UW has good programs in your areas of interest, and the others probably do, as well. What a nice choice you have to make! :)

I too would caution against using the U.S. News rankings as a benchmark. That stated, there are differences among these three schools in terms of overall academic strength, and there is no doubt that Washington is the strongest of the three - at least in terms of academic research and quality of faculty (although teaching quality is another matter entirely). Washington is one of the finest research universities in the country. Unless Boston or Syracuse are demonstrably superior in other areas (which they may or may not be, I am not qualified to judge), Washington is probably your best bet.

You need to talk further with students and persons whom are familiar witht the quality of student life at these places because, academically they are not far apart in quality. And frankly, the physical attributes of these campues are dramatically different. While U of Washington and Boston U are both urban campus (not a lot of lawns), BU is stretched out on a narrow strip of real estate adjacent to the Charles River, so it’s a vertical campus…while the UW is somewhat sprawling because its big. Syracuse is another situation altogether. Syracuse, NY and Seattle, WA have similar rainy weather.

There is little difference between a 42 ranked school and a 52 ranked school. I think the U of Washington would be the most enjoyable experience, as well as the cheapest. Syracuse gets dumped on with a huge amount of snow every year, and BU isn’t really a campus. U Washington is also closer to home for you, I would assume. I would suggest UW.

“BU is stretched out on a narrow strip of real estate adjacent to the Charles River”

The Storrow Drive (a busy highway) separates the campus from the river.

Another Udub vote. Better campus, better city, better school.

I’ve been to the Charles River Regatta more than once and I’ve sat on the grass on the Boston University side of the riverbank. It’s not a complicated walk from the campus over the roadway to the riverbank.

Yes, but you have to cross over the Storrow Drive (and west of the BU Bridge, the Mass Pike and the Storrow Drive) to get to the river. Nice view of the river from the Law School though.

It’s not like Harvard with a riverfront park abutting campus.

My daughter looked at these same schools, and they are quite a bit different in character. Perhaps you should look carefully at what you want out of a school. U Dub is a very large school with a lot of folks that are from the local area. The classes are large. It is in a city, but not right downtown. It rains a lot. Syracure is a middle size school in a small city. It is cold there and snows a lot. They offer a diverse program. BU is right downtown in a city, also colder and snowy. It all depends on what you like.
