U. Rochester Class of 2027 Official Thread

I spoke to admissions, if no merit aid mentioned in the admission letter none’s coming.

I guess I (or my kid) should have spoken to them much earlier about the amount and probability of merit aid in light of the cost.

Thank you for that update. Better to know!

Yes, thanks for the update. It’s good to know. I feel for those of you who missed out, esp with very worthy stats IMO.

I guess both of failed in our due diligence. I follow the Syracuse thread too as we are waiting on that one too but some of the commenters over there said they took Rochester (and others) off their list early based on CDS (common data set) database that showed UR was very low on scholarship amounts and number they award. I had never heard of CDS but I am reviewing it now and will bookmark for my next D so i don’t make the same mistake.

Here is where to voice your outrage. [urscholarship@ur.rochester.edu]

Yeah I heard back from U of R admission office and said merit would be mentioned in the admission letter son received last week; so we are taking U of R off son’s list. Which is good as many to choice from; thankfully it wasn’t a top choice.

That sounds good for you then - makes the decision easy instead of having to ponder finances vs top choice.

I feel for those who had it as a top choice and can’t realistically afford it.

Yep, I should have looked more carefully.

We’re from out of the area and did a swing through NY and MA visiting schools that give merit aid. I saw you on the Syracuse forum too…UR and Syracuse were my kids two favorites. It’s rather sad UR relies entirely on need based I guess like the other elites that don’t have to discount to attract top students. Good for UR since I guess they can fill their freshman class anyway; sad for middle class folks like me that feel shut out. Honestly, I feel kind of sad as the Welcome! and Events! emails from UR roll in, but the kid is fine and has moved on. Hoping for Syracuse, we’ll see. Kid is just a science major not Newhouse or such. SU isn’t cheap without merit aid either.

Kid has UMass with plenty of merit aid but I suspect will decide on a good public school nearer to us.

Good luck to your kid and you. But you know as well as I that, even though it sounds like self-consolation and rationalizing in the face of disappointment, it’s far and away what he/she makes of college not the other way around.

Actually, they do offer merit, but not match. The daughter’s friend got some merit scholarship but it would not make a dent. Girl is not considering that offer seriously.

I called financial aid up to confirm that my daughter received no merit and to confirm the final cost of attendance . I was transferred to admissions to inquire about merit. Admissions said that my daughter should get an email about merit by Friday. It may be worth inquiring about merit .

Thanks for that update Dedas. Will do the same.

I read the yield rate at UR is very low and around 23% which means a large rejection rate by accepted students. May have to do with poor financial aid or that UR is a back-up school for the ones wanting to get into ivy. Not sure. But it implies to me that maybe there is still a chance for merit for those of us that really like UR and want to attend. LOL.

Curious to know - is anyone committing to Roc?

Mine really likes it but the price tag is just too much

Totally understandable. Working in a high school, unfortunately I see a lot of students get unaffordable acceptances from many colleges. It’s always a roll of the dice to see which colleges like which students the best each year.

I hope you have affordable options.

In my dream world I’d be able to finance every student I knew (and liked) wherever they wanted to go and got accepted. In the real world I rejoice with those who rejoice and encourage those who end up elsewhere. It helps that I ended up at my second choice due to finances back in the Dark Ages - and I enjoyed it once I was there.

Has anyone been you URoch ASD? It was pretty dismal. No fan fair, and nothing much planned for the students. We didn’t feel welcome or wanted.

We were going to go up on the 17th
But thinking it maybe quiet bc everyone is back 8n school for break

No, they weren’t on break. It seemed like the administration was checked out and didn’t really care if we decided on URoch or not.

Sorry to hear that’s the impression it left. We are headed up in a couple of weeks. We have attended some of the recent virtual sessions for admitted students and enjoyed some of those. I will say we thought UR did a great job with the campus tour/info session when we first visited last year. But, hope our experience for the upcoming admitted students day isn’t a disappointment!

Yes, I think that was part of what was so surprising and disappointing. We had a great visit last year before applying.
