Which school has more institution prestige-- Union or University of Rochester?

Rochester by far.

I graduated from the University of Rochester in 1987 and it has opened lots of doors for me in my life. I often hear from people that I have attended one of America's best universities, even though I was really reluctant to attend at the time. It would be a great choice. Union is also a good school and my best friend went there and is now a major executive in top corporation, but I think that he would also agree that overall, Rochester is a superior school.

My d was accepted to both Union & Rochester as well. While she liked both schools, she ultimately felt that Union was too small, and didn't like Schenectady at all. The feel of both campuses is very different. And d ultimately preferred the freedom of the Rochester curriculum. Around here (MA), Rochester is considered more prestigious.

My son will be attending Union in the fall. I agree with the above posters that Rochester is a bit higher than Union, although I do not know by how much in the real world. They are also somewhat different, in that Rochester is at least twice the size of Union. That can be either good or bad, depending on your preference. I have not seen Rochester, but Union has a beautiful (but small) campus. Schenectady is not going to win them any brownie points (definitely depressed), although there is more available off campus than a quick glimpse might indicate and tens of millions of dollars are currently being invested in its downtown. Union appears to be well known, highly regarded and well represented in the NYC metro area (I assume the same for Rochester, but I really do not know). Either way, if you are looking based solely on institutional prestige, I think the nod goes to Rochester.

Thank you for all of your thoughtful responses.
