U.S. Navy

After I graduate from USMMA and I want to join the U.S. Navy, am I guaranteed a commissioned to join the U.S. Navy Branch? Or will it depend if I qualify medically? I already have a medical waiver for my eyes (I waived a -8.50 diopter from the regular standard -6.00) to go to USMMA. Will I be accepted to the Navy four years from now? What majors are available if I want to go to that route?

Hannah...my guess would be yes. I understand that after graduating from USMMA, one is obligated to be in the Naval reserve for 8 years, unless going active duty in another branch of the military.

Plus, if I understood everything correctly...on Acceptance day...the candidates were sworn into the Navy. If I am wrong, please someone correct me.

I would think that your question could be answered by the admissions office

nothing is ever guaranteed; however, if you are medically qualified you the Navy will be more than happy to have you on active duty. There are some reasons why someone would not be accepted, usually due to a medical condition. It would most likely be due to something that happened to you at the Academy though, because if you are accepted to the Academy you are qualified for the Navy. On Acceptance Day you will be sworn into the USNR/MMR program.

As for major selection it doesn't matter...all majors are available to those who want to go active duty navy. The military really doesn't care what your major is. Even if you're a deckie the Navy loves to make you an engineer and if you're an engineer they will love to make you a deckie.
