U. Washington, prestigious?

It was ranked number 17 for world institutions but a lowly 45 on news weekly? Does it truly provide an ivy league like education?

Is it worth transferring from U. Washington to an ivy league for computer science, say Brown or Columbia SEAS, or UCLA or USC?

If you're instate, don't transfer. UW has a great computer science program thanks to its proximity to Microsoft and other tech companies (Amazon, Boeing, etc.). Its pretty competitive to get into the program though, so you might want to consider that too. Personally though, I don't think it would be worth it to transfer. UW's program is hard to beat, especially for a state school...

jesus... do you LIKE the college? if you do, stay there if you dont, transfer...

I don't get it. Why'd you think that Brown, Columbia, UCLA or USC are more prestigious than UDub in computer science? UDub is ranked in the top 10 in computer science in most rankings (it's Bill Gate country). I don't any of the others can claim that.

Btw, you have to re-apply to the CS dept in your sophomore year at UDub ... and it's highly competitive.

Can you tell me more about this sophomore year re-applying process? Is there any way that you are guaranteed/criteria for the process? Get a 2.0 or above gpa or?

Also, is UW really ranked top 10 for undergraduate in cs? I hear it's graduate school is great but undergraduate is still in the 40's?

those world rankings are bunk as a trunk

bumparoogans

UW is great for CS grad or undergrad. The ranking would apply to both pretty much.

The world rankings are good for research oriented schools--if you want to go where the top researchers are it is very accurate.

The World Top Schools list is made by some Japanese university using ridiculous and uninformative criteria. Ignore it.

At any rate, no, U-Dub doesn't offer an "Ivy League like" education - but wait before you think I'm bashing U-Dub. I'm not. What I mean to say is that the Ivies are all small schools with intensely competitive admissions, whereas UW is a big university with competitive admissions.

You'll necessarily see different types of people enrolling in UW and in the Ivies, but by no means can anyone claim that the Ivies are objectively 'better' - especially not in computer science, where UW rocks. I'd stay at UW unless you have some other compelling reason to transfer.

Not for undergraduate.

The reason it is ranked so high on the world rankings is because those, i think, are largely based on research and graduate programs. I know the University of Washington medical school is considered one of the tops in the nation, and is very well reguarded.
