U Washington to expand enrollment

UW mulls adding more slots for freshmen

Plus other tidbits

top schools should've been doing that as the applicant pool increased

Several are now--H, Y, P to start

No. Instead, the legislature should support the expansion of the state's other existing colleges. Seats at Western Washington U, Eastern Washington U, Central Washington and Washington State U are already empty. That's a better use of tax dollars.

I don't think the state should force kids to go where they don't want and might not have what they want. They should just move the money to the places people want to go.

If the money is available. And the Washington State legislature has been notoriously stingy with the universities in recent years. Everyone can't matriculate at the UW. By the way, where is there room to expand the physical plant at the Montlake campus?

I read they are building a several new dorms so they must have room somewhere. There is lots of underutilized land just west of the Ave. Also most U's have some room to adborb more classes in existing buildings. They have added a bunch since I moved here in 91 and not upped enrollment.

agreed that Western and Wazzu are excellent options and students should be ENCOURAGED to apply and attend there, as better usage of tax dollars while receiving a quality education. Its less so at Eastern Washington and Central Washington, I believe.

But on the whole I support the expansion of freshmen seats (which are really about dorm spaces if you think about it) at ALL top colleges as the applicant pool has increased. Who wants this stopped? The people who have pedigrees from these colleges and want them to retain their lofty "most selective" status. Its bogus.

For UDub, it's more than just dorm spaces. Students have problem registering for some of the more popular classes. I've seen students sitting on steps at Kane while waitlisting for the class.

Not all of the 1,700 new spots will be at the Seattle campus; part will be earmarked for the Tacoma and Bothell campuses. I don't know about Tacoma, but who wants to go to the Bothell campus, anyway?

Only 600 of the new enrollment slots would be added at the UW's Seattle campus. The rest would be divided between the Tacoma and Bothell branch campuses, the latter of which has struggled in recent years to meet enrollment goals.

Even 600 is a lot to add on the already under-support Seattle campus. And how would increasing slots at Bothell help if it's already having problem meeting its current enrollment goals?
