I'm applying to Arizona and Oregon out of state. What scholarships can I get based on my SAT? I have a 1240/1600 on my SAT but have a low GPA. Also, for financial aid, what do they look at besides of income, do they look at the SAT? If I don't get 1/2 of aid money from one of these schools (6 or 7 grand) then I cannot go.

I don’t know how UO selects who gets their scholarships, but I do know that recipients for UA’s Academic Excellence Award (the merit scholarship for non-residents) are chosen on the basis of GPA, test scores, and EC’s. A high test score alone will not get you any merit money; in order to be competitive, you will also need to at least exceed the average GPA for entering freshman (3.36 UW) and have other achievements (honors, awards, etc.).

Even if a low GPA makes you ineligible for merit money, however, you can still get need-based aid if your family’s EFC is low. Have you used UA’s financial aid calculator to see what you might get? Just go to:

You don't say where you're from, but if you're from a western state, be sure to look into the Western Undergraduate Exchange. You would get a big break on tuition at U of O. I wouldn't be too optimistic about purely merit aid, however, unless you have stellar qualifications you haven't mentioned (e.g. NMSF).

I'm from California and thats the problem. Oregon doesnt let people from california do WUE, even tho I met the 1200 SAT requirement, I still wouldn't get it because there is only 20 open spots. For Arizona, you can only qualify if you major in mining or geography.

For U of A its Geological Engineering or Mining Engineering, not geography. What about some of the LACs?

What is LACs?

LACs = Liberal Arts Colleges
