Nice. What’s now needed is an expansion or replacement of the Rec Center and major refurbishments for several of the liberal arts building, like ten Hoor, Rowand-Johnson, Graves, BB Comer.

I agree Feenotype, though I wonder if UA is putting most of its money into Science and Engineering programs cause that is where the money makers are found. Perhaps once those programs gain greater prestige and secure greater research funding, there will be more money for the liberal arts and social sciences.

Tell me, is the equipment at the REC center outdated? Havent been there in years. Looks great from the outside, though I imagine a more centralized location would be a great addition. They are building a new, but smaller one once the new dorm is completed next to Rose Towers.

No, it’s state-of-the-art, but undersized. The expansion was designed and completed before Witt even got here, so it was designed for a student population of 25K (accounting for the then enrollment of ~20K, plus natural growth). I don’t think a new rec center is necessary.

There are plans for a second rec center. One that will be north of Honors.

And, I vaguely remember that ten Hoor is being remodeled.

If you think the rec center is undersized, why object to a second one being built? I think building a second one near honors is a good idea. The kids could easily walk there.

Hmm…I never really thought of that as another rec center. I thought it was just a weight room. Either way, I don’t see a problem with building that. I think I meant to say that it won’t be necessary to build another full-blown facility.

*, administrators are also contemplating building a new recreation center and dining hall. *

The article didn’t say a “weight room,” it suggests a second rec center.

The second rec center may not include tennis courts and other things that aren’t crowded at the original rec center, but it probably will include machines, aerobic rooms, a gym, racquetball courts, a relaxing area, and other popular features of the current center.

Well, admittedly my spatial senses are very poor, but I’m not seeing how they can fit a new residence hall, a new rec center with all those facilities, and the parking lot into that space.

Feeno, I agree that the current construction site does not look big enough to fit a residence hall, rec center, and parking lot. I think the rec center may come later once once Rose Towers is demolished or more of the Bryce property can be used.

On a related note, now that the College of Nursing has their new building, what is preventing Russell Hall from [at least temporarily] being converted into a residence hall? Assuming it could be renovated to look/feel less like a hospital, it could replace some of the traditional-style dorms and feature two-person suites in a central location.

I too, am puzzled about the location for his future residence hall, the parking lot, etc. Can anyone tell us where exactly it will go? I wonder if UA has any plans to acquire Clara Verner Towers as well. That certainly takes up needed space, but of course, it is home to a large number of seniors.

Is Russell Hall that small old building that has/had that nursing sign? Was that the nursing building before the new one was built? That is tiny.

When will Phase 3 of SEC be complete?

BTW…the Capstone College of Nursing building looks VERY impressive. I saw it on Saturday when I went to help my son move to The Bluff.

(BTW…The Bluff is awesome. Son’s apt has 2 large bedrooms - each with a bathroom and walk-in closet. There is also an office, full kitchen, and a washer and dryer. The apt also has a patio-sized balcony, so we got him a patio set. Awesome that the NMF scholarship is covering it! )

Russell Hall was on the northeast corner of Hackberry Lane and University Blvd. The bottom floor is where the old Student Health Center used to be.

I’m really surprised (shocked actually) that UA has not made any of the “up-and-coming” college lists, e.g. USN&WR. This is a school that is on the rise academically, infrastructure, aesthetics, selectivity, athletics, faculty hiring, housing, NMF’s, honors program, federal grants - you name it.

While other state school systems are making serious cutbacks, UA is going in the other direction. While I know everyone on this list knows about the quality revolution at UA, it seems that the secret has not quite made it into the mainstream and old stereotypes still persist.

Yeah, it would be nice. S heard the “you are selling yourself short” from someone this week. Ugh- let’s see - Honors College, Presidential scholarship, tremendous opportunities, come on. Always from unknowledgeable people who of course aren’t paying the bills. I asked him if he would like to go to some highly ranked NE LAC in the middle of nowhere with 2000 students. He didn’t think so. I think when they graduate though it will be known.

Yeah!
On another note- I am currently on a very small island in canada. I am at the only restaurant here getting take out and I tried out my first “where y’all from” Some Tennessee fans from Memphis. Sometimes you just don’t know which way they go- Tennessee or Ole Miss. Gracious of course.
