*TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Norma Cuellar and Dr. Susan Gaskins, professors in The University of Alabama Capstone College of Nursing, will be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing Fellowship during a formal ceremony at the AAN’s annual conference in Washington, D. C. in October.

Induction into the AAN Fellowship is one of the highest honors in nursing. Fellows are elected through a highly selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions in nursing and health care and whose work has influenced nursing practice and health policies benefiting all Americans.

How hard is it to get into the nursing school? Is it something they have to declare right off the bat? We met a Freshman at our recruiting party last year and she said she was a nursing student.

Your D wouldn’t have any trouble getting in if desired.

Bama does not have direct admit into the BSN program, you have to apply/qualify…but like I said, your D would have no problem. Typically, you have to have a high GPA…over 3.5 to qualify (even tho the nursing page states a lower GPA).

Bama’s nursing students boast a 99% pass rate on the National Exam…which is one reason why it takes high GPA to get in.

You don’t have to declare right away, you apply as a sophomore. But, you have to take the pre-nursing pre-reqs.

A frosh isn’t technically a nursing student, but those bound for nursing will say that they are. Kind of like the B-school…kids will say that they’re business majors as frosh, but they aren’t really accepted til after they apply during soph year.

The pre-nursing pre-reqs are a bit different from the pre-med ones. So, if your D is considering both, she needs to do the pre-med science ones (which are harder) and nursing will accept them…but check to make sure. Typically, nursing accepts the harder bio, chem, and ochem classes that the STEM majors take.

Thanks Mom,
D isn’t interested in nursing, but one of the girls from D’s HS is and asked how my D like UA, and how good the nursing program is. I had little to no knowledge, but knew I could find out here.;)
