UA Scholar Question

The UA Scholar description on the website says that OOS students get 2/3 tuition, but unlike the Presidential, does not say whether it’s the OOS tuition amount or the in-state amount.

So – is the UA Scholar award /3 of OOS tuition or 2/3 of in-state?

Thanks!

You’ll get 2/3 of OOS tuition. Which would equal roughly $15,000 of the current $22,600 OOS tuition cost.

NJ is right…it is 2/3 of the whole out-of-state tuition…so about $14k-15k per year.

The reason that an amount isn’t mentioned is because the amount of the scholarship INCREASES if tuition increases.

So…a UA Scholar that begins at Bama when the OOS tuition is $21k, will start with a $14k per year scholarship…but if by the time the student is a senior and the OOS tuition is $24k per year, then the scholarship is bumped up to $16k per year. :)

And…remember…if the UA Scholar student is an Engineering or Comp Sci major, then the scholarship is bumped up to full tuition plus 2500/yr. But, the student must START Bama in those majors (any eng’g/comp sci)…and stay within the College of Engineering for the bonus $. He/she can change to another type of engineering, but must stay in the COE to get that extra money.

Are UA Scholars automatically admitted to Honors College? (Am thinking of #2 son, now 16. Unlike older bro, he may not make NMF. His Verbal and Writing scores on practice tests are low 700s, but his Math score so far hasn’t been above 650. PSAT cutoff for NMF is 214 in NC…so it looks as if it may be touch and go. But if he can somehow, possibly, qualify at least for the UA Scholars or Presidential scholarship…that might be doable.)

This is good news – thanks! My niece would like some options besides UGA and finding merit $$ is important. I think this will give her motivation to work on her math scores since she is already solidly in the UA Scholar level, but is close to Presidential level.

I don’t see her suddenly deciding to major in CS or engineering, so I think that $$ will be off the table.

*Are UA Scholars automatically admitted to Honors College? *

Right now, anyone who applies to the Honors College with a 28 ACT or 1250 M+CR SAT is admitted to the Honors College. I think a 3.5 GPA req’t is also being introduced.

I don’t know if Bama will raise the req’ts at some point. UHP/IHP courses are VERY expensive because of the 15 student limit. Dr. Witt wants to keep the req’ts where they are at.
