Does anyone know or know someone that does about the Uarts - Acting program? We are deciding between, Uarts and and CCPA and would like informed opinions if possible. Need to make a decsion in next week or so. Any help is appreciated.

I am a sophomore musical theater major at UArts...my roommate is an acting major and I am very familiar with the program. I can't give you any opinions about CCPA, but I can say that the training in the acting program at UArts is excellent. We receive intense Meisner training sophomore year. In addition, there are many stage combat opportunities and people can get certified at the end of their four years. We do various styles of plays. Acting majors also take movement classes, voice and speech, acting for camera senior year, dialects...I'm happy to answer specific questions if you have any! Also, Philadelphlia is a wonderful city to be in because we're on S. Broad Street where ALL the shows are and that's amazing to be a part of that!

My daughter is a freshman MT student at UArts. Acting and MT students take Acting Studio classes together so to that extent I can comment on the Acting program. My daughter has found the acting classes to be demanding but rewarding. She feels that she has grown tremendously in even the short time that she has been at UArts. Two of her closest friends are a sophomore and freshman in the acting program and could not be happier with their experience. We have seen both of them perform in some emotionally rich and complex 1 acts and have been very impressed with the focus, credibility and content of their performances.

As Broadwaywannabe mentioned, UArts' location is a mecca for theatre students. There are no less than 8 performance centers within a 5 minute walk of each other and the school on Broad St. Add to it 2 additonal theatres a 10 minute walk away and other theatres located within 20 minutes walking distance. UArts students are surrounded by Broadway show touring productions, local major show productions, local original productions, experimental theatre, major ballet, opera and orchestral companies, the list of opportunities seems endless. At night, the streets are filled with students and young professionals taking advantage of all that the city has to offer.

Is there any intership opportunities for acting majors? And how many freshmen do they accept into the program?

While my daughter is a MT major, many of her friends are acting majors so I'll take a shot at answering your questions based on my discussions with them and my general knowledge of the school. During your freshman and sophomore years, time is not built into the curriculum for outside internships (nor are students permitted to pursue outside engagements during the semester under school policy). Between classes, school shows and rehearsals, crew obligations and class preparation, it's a pretty full schedule. Second semester junior year and senior year, the curriculum affords the time for outside pursuits which are encouraged, particularly during the senior year. However, all students who remain in Philadelphia during the summer can pursue a plethora of internship opportunities at the many local theaters.

My recollection is that the acting program accepts about 50 or 55 students for a yield of about 30.
