if i send my appeal postmary by april 15, 2005
will they actually respond by may 1, when other uc’s require that u sign SIR
what if they notify u after may 1 that u are accepted, and u have already signed the SIR, what r the options that i have?

call the campus where u sent your SIR to cancel your space but you'll lose your deposit. Sending SIR is just discouraged but when you're on appeal it's understandable.

is that actually possible to do after may 1? isn't the SIR a formal contract?

Has anyone received a response to an appeal from a UC yet? Just curious...its hard to be patient when this is going on.

SIR = Statement of INTENT to Register.

It is 'binding' in the sense that the university now knows to count you as an entering freshman for various purposes (enrollment, housing, statistics, etc). It is not binding in that leaving the agreement will end in some legal penalty.

You are not allowed to submit multiple SIRs, but it's a moral contract. Sending it in basically means that barring extenuating circumstances, you'll be there in the fall. However, all schools know about waitlists, so they will understand. As wellendowed said, you forfeit your deposit, but nothing else.

My son sent an appeal via overnight mail to UCLA on 3/14 and still has not received a response.

i sent mine in today and i dont expect a response til may 1st or 2nd or possibly later. i am sending in my SIR now however.

Does anyone know if the UC's know if you appeal to more than one school? I have heard of kids sending the same appeal letter to all the UC's - seems crazy, but then again, how can the schools check with one another?

Quite easily: it is called the UC System.

The UCs are very interconnected. If they had any reason to want information about your activities at any other UC, they could find out. Not to mention that a lot of your material goes to a central office and then gets routed out.

Why would they care, though? The only time I could imagine it mattering is if you said "You're my first choice and I'll definitely attend if you accept me!" to 5 schools.

i dont really care ... if they respond after may 1st ... if they accept me (not likely) i will forfeit my whooping $100

in exchange for a better education at a better uc

my friend last year appealed to ucla and got accepted ... he got housing at la ... so im not that worried about it ... getting accepted to the actual university is more important but nevertheless we are have backups to go to

backup:

uci
ucd
ucsb
ucr
ucsc
usc

i love how one of your backups is my dream school =)

oh btw i have a question, i just sent in my appeal yesterday, so on the internet when i log into ucsb, it still says decision: not accepted, will it stay like that or will it change to decision pending, and if it did change to decision pending and then to not accepted without me knowing would i get a letter soon? basically, am i gonna know i didnt get accepted in another way if online it just says not accepted with the same stuff. sorry if that didnt make sense.

I called UCSB admissions and asked the same question. They said they do NOT update their on-line admission letter, so yes, it will still say "not accepted." I guess UCLA does it differently.

She did say that they are already responding to some appeals. Our college counselor said they read them all at once (not true).

Give us some hope here...tell us how your friend got in to UCLA on appeal..details, please! what were his stats and was did he base his appeal on?

And yes, if you get in late, you'll just have to deal with the housing. UCSB's and UCLA's alternate housing isn't cheap, its just a little hard to find if its too late. Yes,you can live in an apartment off campus, but I think freshmen should live in the dorms for at least one year.

i really want to live in the dorms my freshman year. im thinkin ucsb should have some extra housing cuz i know sooo many people who applied+got accepted and are not going there. i know ucsb accomodates for that and accepts a ton more people than they can hold but for some reason i think not as much people are going to attend as they think.

i doubt it will be hard to find housing when they accept your appeal

i am not so sure what he based his appeal on cuz he didnt tell me but these were his stats:

1330 sat
680/710/660 sat ii
3.9-4.0 w gpa
4 yrs leadership/ASBprez, freshman class prez, sophomore class prez, junior class prez
involved with many ec's including 3 yr tennis and 4 yr orchestra
480 hrs community service/volunteering
his father is grad of univ of texas-austin (i think)
took this following ap classes: ap lit, ap lang, ap physics, ap chem, ap cal ab, ap cal bc, ap stats, yep ... thats pretty much it

i still dont know that basis of his appeal that got him in ...

I heard the same thing about UCSB...lots of kids applied that are not going. However, they send out more acceptances that they can accept, knowing that kids do this.

I wonder if we should start a posting of who got in to UCSB and is NOT going?

does anyone have an approximation of what percentage of appeals are just fancy words asking the committee to reconsider their application? any guesses?

They will respond right before May 1st. It happened to my freind last year but she put her deposit at another UC thinking that she wouldn't be accepted or it would not be on time.
Well, she got in and had to forfeit her deposit gladly!

im so nervous. i want to go to sb so bad. it felt really good to turn my appeal in, but i cant even imagine what its gonna feel like if i get rejected, too bad you cant appeal an appeal =)
