@naregian Last year UCLA’s stuff didn’t update till like October or November.
Ahh dang that’s a ways away. Oh well, good to be rid of that distraction haha
Do any of you think it would make much of a difference if I were to finish IGETC in the spring instead of the fall? I have the ability to finish it in the fall, but I’m not sure if it’s worth adding another social science course to my schedule. I know it doesn’t matter all too much, but I’d rather do all that I can to benefit my app.
This question is probably obvious too, but how much weight is course load given? It doesn’t matter how many classes I’m taking so long as I’m full-time and will have enough units, correct? Or would it look significantly better if I took more units?
(I’m exhausted and lack the ability to reason at the moment, so forgive me for asking questions that I know are obvious)
@goldenclub no, IGETC completion doesn’t really matter so long as you complete it at some point. Having it done early doesn’t give any advantage. I’m no so sure about course load, so I’m going to defer to someone else on that question.
I want to keep my course load light for the fall (so that I have time for my personal statement, reading/writing for major-related work outside of classes, etc.). Right now, it looks like this:
I have 5.33 AP units (as awarded by UC’s, not my CC), and I will have 27 CC units + 4 UC units before the start of Fall. 36.33 total.
This is my planned schedule for the Fall:
PHILOS 25A (Ancient Philosophy) at UCB - 4 units
ANTHRO 18: Introduction to Anthropological Linguistics (Social Science IGETC requirement) - 3 units
Humanities 21 - Film: Art and Communication (Art requirement for IGETC) - 3 units
Humanities 40 - Religions of the World - 3 units
The latter two classes are eight-week courses that do not overlap (one is from august- october, and the other is from october-december). So, effectively, I will be taking only 3 courses at one time, which should make for a fairly light schedule. If I were to add another course, it would be a philosophy class with a professor I know, and it would definitely be easy. Still, I’m skeptical as to whether adding a class would be worth it at all.
That looks fine and you can finish IGETC in spring (as well as major prep).
Hi, I’ve been following cc threads for almost two years now and I’m finally applying this fall.
So Could someone chance me pleaase

Chance me? Thanks.
@VeniVidiVici1 Is there any way that you’ll be able to finish IGETC or breadth by the end of spring? Your EC’s look good, and your GPA is good. Think of a solid explanation for your gap, because they will ask you why it’s there.
@EECSProdigy I was going to say that you’d have a good chance, but then I saw your post:
" I will be attending community college in the fall of 2015. I plan to take 32 credits. To give you a background, I’ve had a 4.0 in high school and a 2150 SAT. I also scored a 110 on the AMC 12, if that helps. I’m pretty knowledgeable in the classes I’m going to take. I’m just wondering about the course load. How hard will the following schedule be for me:
Physics A (mechanics w/calculus)
Physics B( Electricity/magnetism)
CS61A (Berkeley level class at Laney college)
CS61B ( berkeley level class at CC)
freshman english
multivariate calculus
linear algebra
differential equations "
I don’t know if this is still your plan, but this isn’t high school. Taking 8 classes is way too many. 4 is the norm, and 5 often constitutes a heavy workload, especially with the courses you have to take. If you split these classes up over the course of two semesters, then sure - but 32 units in one semester? You’d have to be out of your mind to take that schedule.
Honestly, if you want to get into EECS, it’s probably a better idea to spread things out, do more major-related EC’s, etc. EECS is terribly difficult to get into. Your EC’s are impressive, but you’re asking for problems with that plan. CS majors often take 3 years at a CC to finish all of their classes. I’d recommend taking a second year at CC. Then, you can finish your breadth requirements and all of that as well. It’s seriously not a feasible plan. It’s comparable to working at least two full-time jobs. You’ll easily be spending 80 hours per week. Don’t do that to yourself. You may consider yourself to be smart, but nobody can handle that sort of course load, regardless of intelligence.
I’m posting this for my hubby
Major: Mechanical Engineering
GPA: 3.97
Major GPA: 3.99
IGETC: will be done this spring
Pre-reqs: all that articulate according to assist will be done this spring
EC: full time summer job, part time job during school year, TRiO peer mentor, math/science tutor, volunteer at bilingual elementary school, blood drives, and Christmas cheer, math club
Additional info: first generation high school graduate and college student, three young children, migrated to US as a child (soon to be US citizen)
Also applying to: UCLA, UCI, UCD, UCSD
Good luck everyone!
@sugarbabies3 I think your husband has a very good chance, so long as his personal statements are well-written. Best of luck!
@goldencub thanks a bunch, that means a lot to me he’s always been really good with his writings, and his English profs tried making him go that route instead, but he dislikes it lol
I’m really excited and nervous! As we all are! Can it be spring yet?
I got admitted in to a few universities last year (USC, Pepperdine, UCSC, etc), but I am opting to take a shot at my dream of attending Berkeley and stay at CCC another year. I didn’t apply last year because I was missing Calc I/Calc II. The reason I was admitted to the others (USC, etc) was because Business Calc articulates over for them.
Major: Econ
ASSIST GPA: 3.81 (currently a 3.80 but with an A in Calc I I’ll be at a 3.81)
Overall GPA: 3.85
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Done
Pre-reqs: Calc I in Fall 2015, Calc II will be done Spring 2016
EC: here is where I hope admissions will see through my low GPA. I’ve been a Youtube content creator since I was 14 years old (2008) that has amassed 50,000 subscribers and 40 million video views. I also own a website with 100k users, where I have big name clients including Red Bull, Office Max, etc. I worked as a social media marketing executive full time (took gap year) for a software company in the Bay area (CEO found my videos on Youtube and sent me a job offer when I was attending CCC so I took the gap year and was blessed for the opportunity).
Additional Info: First gen college student, some setbacks I plan to write about, upward A trend for two years.
Weakness: Workload is only Calc I and Calc II in Fall/Spring. When I took the full time job position English 1B grade slipped(got a C). I’ve taken a 20 unit semester and pulled off a 4.0 so hopefully they see that I can handle a full time schedule. Also, I’ve been at CCC since 2012 but I did take ~1 year for work.
Applying to: UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCSD, UCSB
TAG to: UCD
Any tips, chance, advice is greatly appreciated.
Good luck to everyone!!!
On the Media Studies Major website, it says:
“You cannot have completed more than 70 semester units (excluding AP) of college course work at the time of application to the major.”
Also says:
“If you have completed more than 70 units, or have less than a 3.2 GPA in Media Studies courses, you will need to submit a cover letter and a graded paper from one of the prerequisite courses. Appeal applications are reviewed twice per semester by the faculty. Admission decisions are final.”
Is this applied to CCC transfer student with more than 70 semester units?
@jonuni94 wow, that’s impressive. Make sure to talk about your gap year and EC’s extensively in at least one of your essays.
@amigo421, I would think it doesn’t apply to CCC students as you can only transfer 70 units max, no matter how many you took. I think it’s geared to any upper division from a 4-year. But you should just send an email to that Laura person, who’s the student advisor. She answers right away. My daughter is media studies this fall. Laura answered her emails and she met her at student orientation and said she was super-nice.
Appreciate it @goldencub – which prompt would you say I should write EC’s in?
You’ve got a perfect GPA yourself and are taking Cal classes so I’ve got to say you have a great shot! Look forward to chatting with you all on here through this process!
@jonuni94 Possibly the transfer prompt? -
What is your intended major? Discuss how your interest in the subject developed and describe any experience you have had in the field — such as volunteer work, internships and employment, participation in student organizations and activities — and what you have gained from your involvement.
That would seem to work more. Otherwise, you have the general prompt:
Tell us about a personal quality, talent, accomplishment, contribution or experience that is important to you. What about this quality or accomplishment makes you proud and how does it relate to the person you are?
Also, thanks! Yes, I hope so. If you’d like feedback on your P.S. when you get to it, let me know.
