UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

@goldencub Definitely- we should exchange essays for feedback. Have you started on the essays or know what you’ll be writing about on both prompts? I feel like I can write about it in either prompt…

Maybe in the intended major prompt I can talk about more about economics, why I enjoy the subject and how it relates to what I’ve done. In the personal quality/experience I can talk more about my life and how I got interested in starting businesses in sort of a story format.

@jonuni94 I thought if you apply to Haas you can only apply there. I’m pretty sure you can’t apply to Econ at the same time

I’m applying as an Econ major @Iwillbeahaashole

@jonuni94 I’m planning on starting the essays when I’m done with the class I’m taking. For the transfer prompt, I was planning on talking about my interest in philosophy, experience with it in my fellowship thing, etc. That will be easy to write. For the other prompt, I was going to talk about my first experience with a death, how I overcame it, and how I’ve grown from it. It’s kind of loosely related to philosophy, too, so yeah. I’ll write my first draft or two before the Fall semester starts.

@goldencub Nice, I think maybe its overkill for me to talk about business/econ in both prompts then. Maybe I’ll write one on EC’s/econ/business and the other more about a personal setback (ironically also about death). Near death experience for me from salmonella food poisoning in high school. I’ve just kind of been worried that a story like that will be perceived as if I am trying to get sympathy from the readers… I guess it really is important on how it is written at the end of the day.

@jonuni94 well, it depends. What exactly is your youtube channel about?

@jonuni94, You should have a really good shot. Your stats are better than most of the transfers I’ve met so far.

I would however highly recommend finding some way to incorporate multi-variable calculus and/or differential equations into your schedule (Math 53/54 equivalent). Econ admits at cal aren’t necessarily in the major just yet and need to take an intermediate Econ course in their first semester. Adding that course (100A/100B) can be fairly difficult so it’s highly recommend to take those math courses to open up the math based intermediate econ courses (101A/101B) to you making it much easier to meet that requirement.

Take a look at this: https://www.econ.berkeley.edu/undergrad/prospective/transfer-students

Taking an intro to stats class if you haven’t yet also helps a lot with the Stats 20/21/25 requirement as well since a lot of Econ hopefuls end up with Cs or worse in that course.

@SDGoldenBear
Can you chance me?

Major: Business Administration (Haas)
GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0

EC’s:
President of Student Government (Fall 2015-Spring 2016)
Senator of Student Government (Spring 2015)
Summer Marketing Volunteer at a pretty well known nonprofit
Business Development assistant in a not so well known startup in Silicon Valley
Team member (30 hours a week) at pieology
Will be joining PTK in Fall and hopefully get an executive position

Pre Reqs: All done by Fall 2015 besides Calc 2 which I will take spring 2016
I will also have the 7 course breadth requirement finished by spring even though it is not required
In honors program, will have honors certificate in Spring 2016

Personal statements/essays: have not started yet but I will hopefully be starting soon

I am mainly worried because I will not have my Calc 2 (Calc 16b) finished before applying. Any thoughts?

@goldencub Technology category.

@SDGoldenBear Appreciate it! I hope so! Do you mean stats as in EC’s/GPA all combined? Are you talking about Cal Econ people you’ve personally met that already transferred? I read the previous posts–you’re already at Cal right? If so, what are you studying? I was looking at taking Econ 100A and Stats 20 my first semester at Berkeley.

My ap scores came out so I only have to take 6 classses… I’m a math/sci person so doing those are community college should be just fine.

@EECSProdigy 6 classes next semester? Judging from the courses you listed, even that is a ton of work. Good luck, though.

Yes. 6 classes: multivariable calculus(CalculusIII),linear algebra, differential equations, english, physics, and structure of computer programs… Shouldn’t be that bad since only 2 of those classes are lab based. The comp sci class is going to be really easy because of my experience/teacher. The teacher is known to be very easy lol…

Need to also do the prompt… Have you guys started yet?

@EECSProdigy I don’t think the six classes will be so bad if you can stay motivated and manage your time effectively. I personally seem to do better with a heavy course load. If my schedule allows procrastinating then I will procrastinate.

@Evilcow867 @EECSProdigy sure, ordinarily 6 courses would be manageable, but to take Multivariable Calc, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations in one semester is a major feat in itself.

@goldencub I agree that it’s very ambitious, and if given the choice he should slow down and spread it as it would definitely be less stressful, but I don’t think it’s impossible. @EECSProdigy will definitely have to manage their time very well.

I take usually take around 19 credits a semester while working and raising a kid, and I never have any problems getting A’s. I think it really all comes down to the person, and how bad they want it. Age and maturity probably play into it as well.

You do what you got to do lol… I want to finish my bachelor’s before I turn 21 years of age. It is just a personal goal.

@goldencub @Evilcow867 Yea, I don’t have anything else to do. No kid, no girlfriend, parents are going to pay everything from classes to transportation… They will pay for everything as long as I get the grades and get into Berkeley. It’s just going to be the six classes. I’m probably going to have to BS some society/club involvement on the application.

@EECSProdigy I wouldn’t lie about anything on the app, if that’s what you’re saying you might do. They may audit your app, in which case you will have to prove your involvement. Also, it’s just not the right thing to do.

Also, for my fellow Philosophy prospective applicants - in my UCB summer sessions course, I’ve met about 5 people who have transferred to Cal as Philosophy majors, and all of their GPA’s were around a 3.6. None of them completed the three prerequisites, although they took similar courses at their college, even though they don’t articulate.

Just figured I would let you all know! It’s surprising how many transfer students actually go to Cal. Anyway, goodnight all, I have a midterm in the morning.
