So I applied last year too. But this year, I noticed there was a space to tell your sexuality at the end of application. I actually have a same sex spouse. I wonder why they ask us and how it works for application.
@Hiroaki0422 It very clearly and concisely explained that it’s asking for demographic purposes. It has no bearing on admissions.

They certainly extended the deadline to reel in some more application revenue. Thousands more will apply and they’ll “increase enrollment,” further impacting classes that didn’t need to be filled with more students. But hey, it’s okay, even our public universities are capitalistic! They’re not too concerned about our chances may go down with a larger applicant pool, it’s all about $$$. Good luck everybody!
@csmcam I’m not quite sure about that.
The amount of money made from applications is pretty insignificant compared to what is needed to fund the UC, I agree with @goldencub
That’s why we internationals and out-of-state are paying 3 times more tuition and not allowed to get financial aid. I do understand that public universities are supposed to be serving for residents, but I’m pissed cause some of my friends who have amazing talents but from poor countries could not afford to go to UC, they went to CSU.
UC seems just take out-of-states and internationals as a mean of getting fund. They don’t value socioeconomic diversity. Now all internationals and out of states are from rich family, but oh well
Well, life’s not fair.
@Hiroaki0422 , you gotta take into consideration how unfair it would be for California residents if tuition was the same as out of staters and international. “Public” is for California residents. It comes out of their tax dollars. It’s not so “public” for people who aren’t even U.S. residents.
It’d be gross if international students paid the same tuition as California residents. The UCs need their funding, and as a collective good it comes out of CA residents taxes. For California residents not to benefit from this would be wrong. And because the UCs need more money, it would be more appropriate for them to raise tuition on OOS and International students than lobbying to increase their tax-revenue, ostensibly creating higher taxes.
@solostish, but what about all the other universities (cough like University of Minnesota) have cheaper tuition for in-state students but also don’t have an out of state tuition that would cause crippling debt? Really UCs are using their name to take advantage of people who aren’t from California. Universities have tuition raises for in state students all the time and still keep out of state tuition more affordable. Of course its not the UCs fault they are pretty broke
I can definitely understand how unfair and difficult it must seem for international students, but no one is forcing them to apply to a UC, plus CSU’s are still pretty good schools in their own right. I guess the way I see it, if I decided to apply to Oxford I would probably not complain that the people of England should foot the bill for me.
@solostish And I don’t think he’s saying tuition should be equal, just less for internation/OOS. I don’t think its too unreasonable for UCs to try and help more non instate students pay for a UC, whether there be more work study or scholarships or whatever.
Well, I’m not complaining about paying high tuition. I myself will be California resident from next year too. I do understand UC is public university and it’s supposed to be serving for California residents. International students and OOS apply to UC because they are rich and they are able to.
My point is that they take all the OOS and international students as the same. There are little to none consideration for people like from poor countries. Many of the brightest guys I met in my CC were from poor countries. Their quality certainly deserves UC, but they chose to go to other public universities because they cannot afford UC. I think it goes against the value of diversity since all the OOS and IS are from rich families, and UC lost many opportunities to get talents from poor nations. Many universities take OOS and international students to pool diversity on campus, but I feel UC is merely using them as a mean of getting fund.
Or they simply have no choice because of the budget problem.
@Molisha The University of Minnesota doesn’t have the same kind of prestige and costs as the UC system. Completely different ballgame. Take UCLA, which is in the heart of Westwood and is the #2 public research university in the nation. Wouldn’t you think that they’d have higher costs? To employ better profs and to take part of higher caliber research? Wouldn’t you think that it’d be more expensive to attend? If name recognition doesn’t matter to you, just go to Minnesota. No one’s making you apply to the UCs.

Just because Californians should pay less doesn’t mean it should be outrageous. Also, I hope you aren’t only applying to UCB because of prestige lol, especially since where you get your undergrad degree doesn’t matter. I never said anyone is making me apply, but at least I’m applying for reasons apart from prestige l
And for your info UMN is a really good school that literally is dragged down from people’s preconceptions about well MN. BUT my overall point is that plenty of good schools offer more reasonable out of state tuition AND even offer in state reciprocity for other states.
Prestige doesn’t matter? A Haas degree, for example, is much more valuable than a business degree from Cal State Fullerton (although CSUF has a good business program I hear). The connections and notoriety that accompanies a degree from a prestigious school is fairly valuable IMO. Not to mention academic rigor.
@goldencub well yeah going to Haas is one thing, but OVERALL prestige doesn’t matter much if you’re planning on going to grad school
@Molisha I respectfully disagree.
@goldencub
lol k, fair enough. I think people focus too much on prestige though. we should all focus more on GPA & Experience! What I like about UCs though is that they give lots of opportunities for experience
“The Transfer Academic Update will be available on January 8. All transfer applicants are required to submit an update even if you do not have any in-progress or planned courses.”
Mark your calendars, everyone. :-B
