UC Berkeley 2016 Transfer Thread

Well… everything should go back to normal again… :)>-

@briank82 Oh, I’m sure that’ll be fun. I was actually considering taking one of those religions classes at Foothill over the winter, but I opted for an Ethics class and a Trauma & The Arts (Humanities) class instead.

That’s with Provost, right? I’ve heard good things.

Yeah, with Provost @goldencub. Enrolled there just for the class, but it’s online. It should be an easy class from what I read, just a good bit of reading and writing. It should be really interesting though, especially with the global climate surrounding religion in general.

Trauma & The Arts sounds interesting. Haven’t taken anything with Ethics yet but I’m sure I’ll soon have my fair share.

@briank82 My two classes are online there as well.

Yeah, I’m looking forward to it. The course outline is really what drew me to it ( http://www.foothill.edu/schedule/outlines.php?act=1&rec_id=5726 ) - seems to touch on a lot of interesting topics, all within the realm of humanities.

Hey guys, so a research position I had which was volunteer is going to become paid (and increase in hours) during spring semester, I need to report this to UCs right? anyways, it probably looks better too?

I don’t think you NEED to report it, for example, like you would a class that is dropped or something. There wouldn’t be any adverse actions from not reporting it like there would be from withholding a dropped class.

I don’t really know how it would be reported though. Are you talking about trying to change it on the TAU in January? Or emailing admissions to make the change?

If you could get it on, it would’t hurt, but I’m not sure how realistic getting that on is.

I was going to email for the change, since if I remember right there isn’t an update on the TAU for work, extra curriculars, etc

Ah I see. Well it certainly won’t hurt to add it. It may not help a ton, but at the very least it won’t hurt. You aren’t required to update it though and leaving it off won’t have any adverse effects.

Hey y’all!

I’ve posted on here a lil while back, and I’m back for some advice bc I’m very slightly freaking out.

To summarize about me:
Currently 17, graduated high school early b/c of really adverse situations that nearly pushed me to drop out, i have a lot a lot a lot of extracurricular a and research exp.

Anyway, when I posted on here before I had a 3.7. All A’s in major classes and a few B’s in unimportant classes (not GE or major prep.)

Applying to cal as Dance Performance Studies which has no major pre-reqs, avg transfer GPA is around 3.6.

I got a D in an 8 week hybrid online macroeconomics class because I was homeless and got robbed (RIP brand new MacBook, plus sturdy old phone and iPad), missed the final and my professor refused to accept a major assignment from me because I sent it in from my personal email rather than my school email. I’m retaking this in the winter session.

However, I just checked and I got a C in my anatomy course as well. I’ve emailed the professor to find out why because I was steadily on track to get a low A/high B, and unless I got like 2% on the final then I have no idea how I dropped to a C. But I also wasn’t on the greatest terms with this prof so idk how well I’ll be able to get that sorted out.

I’m freaking out very silently lol, I’ve never gotten a D or C in my entire time in college and this might be the worst possible time to get one. My GPA’s dropped from a 3.7 to a 3.4 and I think that also makes me ineligible for my UCD TAG /:

I don’t want to go anywhere other than Cal and I will be devastated if this throws away my shot. I explained my weird life circumstances/adversity in my personal statement and I wonder if y’all think it would suffice to say “hey I was livin in the streets and I got robbed and that’s why my grades suck this semester,” as long as I do much better during winter session and spring semester? I know I’ll get an A when I retake macro, and the other major courses I’m taking are Chem, and two calculus courses. Chem will be an easy A for me given my research experience. Calc I’m not so sure, it’s been a while since I’ve taken math, but I think I can manage a B at the very least.

Just, idk, tell me what y’all think, I’m on the verge of crying lol. I may be able to work something out to change my anatomy grade but I’m not 100%.

@RAHforHEE yoooooo I wasn’t attacking you. I read two pages earlier someone thought that holistic might help them with their low GPA. I just threw my piece of bread into the mix. I was reading your comments and thought, “damn. Who’s attacking this guy? I feel bad for him” and then I saw that you tagged me, too.

Chiiilllll I wasn’t attacking you at all. Like 0. Now I know you’re probably just ranting.

Anyway, fukck these notification. I hope you get into Berkeley, like I hope everyone on this thread gets in. Let’s take this thread back to where it belongs.

Cheers,
Solostish.

@afrogeisha Wow. That seems really hard. I couldn’t possibly imagine having to deal with those kinds of circumstances. I’m new to the UC Application system, so does anyone know if there’s any way she could mail Cal a letter explaining the D? That could be a total deal breaker, to be perfectly honest—so you have to find a way to reconcile the situation. And fast.

Get your counselor to write a letter? I’m not too sure. That seems very tricky. You don’t see homeless CC kids with 3.7s very often, so you must be determined as hell. I’m sure there’s a way you could fix this with the UCs.

If you’re a dance major, why were you taking Econ and why are you taking Chem and Calc?

Well, should you get denied, there is always the opportunity to appeal. Your situation is obviously very unique and very difficult, and if given the chance to explain yourself I could see them being understanding.

Curious about the class choices as well since you’re a dance major. If you’re truly interested in them that’s great, but I would just weary of pulling down your grades with fairly difficult classes when your major has no major pre-reqs. Don’t let that stop you from taking them if you enjoy them though!

@afrogeisha Wow. That’s really rough. I’m so sorry to hear that. First off, I would probably appeal to the dean about not accepting that assignment just because you sent it from the wrong email address. That is utterly ridiculous for someone to abuse his authority like that. Same with your anatomy course, if it there really is no logical reason for your grade to have dropped so much. Some professors…

Anyway, I think you should certainly explain your situation to the best of your ability in the winter update–you might even get in touch with them now. In your explanation, try not to sound like you are asking for pity, but at the same time you need to let them know about how hard your life has been lately. I think you have as good a reason as any for your drop in grades, but it’s really hard to know how exactly admissions will react.

As an outside shot, you might want to talk to your community college about academic renewal. You might be familiar with the process (if not, it’s basically the process of removing poor grades from your GPA) and though it usually can only be done after a certain amount of time has passed, maybe it’s possible for them to make an exception considering your circumstances. I really don’t know, but it might be worth asking about.

I hope things are getting better for you and good luck.

@music1990 @briank82 @solostish Thank you!! As for class choices - My long term goals are to get my R.D. License and go to grad school for public health (specifically nutritional epidemiology/community health). At cal I plan to declare public health as a double major so I have to make sure I have the lower divs for that completed. & I applied everywhere else as either a Nutrition or Human Bio/Society. I’m just really really enamored with Cal’s performance studies program and I probably wouldn’t pursue a full major in it anywhere else.

Things are a lot better for me right now - stable living situation, working on repurchasing the stuff that was stolen, and I am just looking forward to transferring and being in a new environment.

@music1990 When I retake macro in the winter session, would that grade replace the D in GPA calculation?

Also do any of y’all know anything about the “Experience Berkeley” program? I had submitted an app to it on a whim right before I submitted my UC app, but never really read into what it was.

I got an email today saying that my app was too late for the Nov 30th deadline, but since the transfer deadline was extended, I could resubmit.

They also mentioned that “Our program will more than double your chances of getting accepted to Cal.”

???

I mean, I’m for sure going to resubmit my app. But do y’all have any information about it? It seems super lowkey and the director takes forever to respond to emails (I had last emailed her Nov 29th and she just got back to me today.)

@solostish No worries, let’s just move forward.

@afrogeisha

You are not ineligible for TAG because of your drop in GPA–it is still above the required GPA. The reason why you may lose your TAG for UCD is because you received a grade lower than a C. It says on he UC Davis TAG worksheet, “Students must meet or exceed the minimum overall GPA by the end of summer 2015. Students cannot fall below the minimum overall GPA and cannot receive grades below a C.”

https://tag.ucdavis.edu/counselors/criteria_print.cfm

You may lose the TAG, unfortunately. But don’t worry! You will go into a separate pile of applicants be considered for regular admission. I had friends get into that school with 2.8 GPA’s, and of course did not TAG. You’re well above that range! Good luck.

@goldencub “Yeah, you’re right. TAG (transfer admission guarantee) is no guarantee at all.”
@MikeSauce “Gotcha, I guess I was confused since TAG is an acronym for Transfer Admittance Guarantee, they really ought to change the name to avoid confusion.”

This is EXACLY why I say TAG is not guaranteed unless you follow the necessary steps. At any point in time, the TAG can be taken away from you. Nothing is guaranteed unless you do what you must do.

Dude, let it go. Nobody cares.

@briank82 What is your problem? People need to know when they are wrong. I am trying to help them understand what the TAG agreement actually means. Leave me alone.

Every time I say something, you have to follow with some sly remark. Stop harassing me and go on about your own business!
