Hi everyone,
I am currently a second-year student at UC Santa Cruz. Only UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside accepted me one year ago. I am here to share my story with other students. I hope my experience can be a reference of your college life, and you can share your experience with me.
Major: Physics & Math (I can only chose one during application)
GPA: 2.6(46 units); I am doing 18 units for Fall 2016, so by the end of this quarter I will have at least a 2.9 GPA, hopefully 3.0.
Courses: I have completed all the fundamental courses for my math major. I will finish the physics fundamental courses by Spring 2017.
Activities:
2014.8(14 days) I went to Imperial College London(ICL) for a science forum. We visited the labs and had a few lectures there. Our picture was published on Scientific American.
2013.7 I went to a summer camp in Harvard University for two weeks. We stayed with five Harvard students for a week and visited Boston. We also listened a lecture from a Noble Peace Prize winner.
Volunteers:
2016.3-2016.4 I was a board game tester for a famous board game company. I played the new designed board game with my friend and write comments on a forum. The job was secret, so I cannot tell the name of the company and the game.
2016.3-2016.5 I worked for a political organization, which is against the government of China(Mainland). I helped organized the email of the advocates.
Work experience:
2014.6-2014.7 I worked for a bookstore called the Bookworm. The Bookworm was established by a daughter of an Britain politician. Many famous authors were invited to give a talk in the Bookworm, and some well-known musicians were invited to give a performance. What I did is selling events tickets and books. Since I love literature and reading novels, the Bookworm became a place where I could read a lot of new novels after work. This was my first part-time job.
2015.6(7 days) I worked for real room escape. What I did was to introduce our rooms to the customers and lead them to start a new game.
2015.8(2 days) I worked for a board game exhibition. I learned how to play the new board games and lead the visitors to play them. The board game my friends and I were in charge of was one of popular games. In the end, the boss gave me a new board game for the gift.
Sports:
- Diving
2015.8 I finished my Open Water course with PADI. We(instructor and other students) went to Cebu, Philippines.
2015.9 I dove for fun in an aquarium in Beijing.
2016.3 I completed the Advanced Open Water at Catalina Island, Los Angles.
2016.4 I spent one day to clean a lake near San Francisco.
2016.6 I completed a special course—Enriched Air in San Francisco.
2016.8 I went to Seychelles on the Indian ocean. I stayed on a diving cruise for 7 days and made 10 dives.
2016.9 I completed my rescue diver course in Santa Cruz.
2.Badminton
2016.3 to now My friends and I played badminton with the club in UCSC. After my friends graduated from UCSC, we go to San Jose to play badminton about twice a week.
2008 I won the eighth(single gender, double) place in the competition in Beijing.
- Fencing
2015.9-2016.4 I joined the fencing club in UCSC. We practiced twice a week(4 hours). I discontinued for the reason of class schedule.
- Sailing
2016.8 I completed the basic sailing course with Cal Adventure at Berkeley Maria.
Research Interest
I am interested in topology and quantum theory.
During past decades, the development of theoretical physics has significant influence on geometry. The physicists brought the concept in topology into quantum theory in order to explain the structure of the object in physics. Microsoft established the Station Q to build topological quantum computer. The Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton has many physicists studying on knot theory(a branch of topology) and quantum theory. Apart from the combination of topology and quantum theory is fun and fascinating, it gives physicists new understanding of the behavior and structure of particles.
Although I am not able to go to the deep topic and read papers on this area, I feel like this topic is both popular and revolutionary. Since my majors are math and physics, I really like to do research in topology and quantum theory.
The topology courses provided by UC Berkeley are attractive to me. Elementary topology and Differential topology are the two courses provided to undergraduate students. I want to take those courses with UC Berkeley.
Unfortunately, UC Berkeley does not provide Quantum Field Theory to undergraduate students. I hope I can take graduate courses after I finished my major requirements.
Thank you for reading my experience. Good luck for your application!
I am very willing to hear your comments and voice.
