If someone could chance me that would be amazing!!

I am a California Community College student trying to transfer in Fall 2017

Major GPA: 3.7
IGETC: Done
Major prep: Done in spring

ECs:
-Worked at a clothing retail store for 2.5 years+

@rachelhlewis Replied to your PM!

@racecartransfer I see, didn’t know we had to do that!
I’ll do that next year though, I am not applying this year at all.

@laccstudent What happened?

@Orangered123 The thing is, I have to declare dependency override for my FAFSA. The current school won’t help me with it in order to apply to UC this year. I was going to apply to UC Berkeley only because I would definitely pay out of my pocket for an opportunity like that. Due to this personal reason, I have decided to stay one more year. It works in my favor because I can have another year taking prerequisites for Med School. Also, I will be eligible to be independent student and apply to Cal Grant.

Don’t worry guys, I’m still hanging in here. Plus, I have until January to decide if I’m making a good decision.

You must ask your desired school (UCB?) to grant you a dependency override; they’re not easy to get. Are you familiar with the details?

@vonlost Thank you very much for the info!! I’m familiar with the process at my current school (LACC) but it’s quiet cloudy for what to do with UC Berkeley. However, next year I’ll be able to be independent student on FAFSA and able to fill out Cal Grant form.

It’s okay, it works in my favor because I have quiet a few classes that I needed to take in order. I had to stay in school one more year.

Im just wondering, does anyone plan on listing their SAT or ACT scores on their application, maybe in the additional comments or someplace else? I’m a one year transfer, so I took the SAT within the last year. I received a 2280, which is generally pretty competitive among freshman applicants, but I’m wondering if admissions would even consider the SAT score of a transfer student. Any suggestions?

@TL0067, Put them in the additional comments. You never know, it may be a deciding factor for an admissions counselor. I don’t see it hurting any and can only have a positive impact if anything. I say go ahead and put them in the additional comments since they are “aspects of your app that you haven’t discussed anywhere else.” More so, I remember some strong 1 year applicants that got rejected while other 2 year applicants with somewhat lower stats were accepted over the past few years. Not sure why, but Id put those in just in case it helps.

They don’t look at SAT if you’re transferring in as a junior.

@racecartransfer Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it. I think that is exactly what I will do. Also, do you now any of the stats of the one year transfers that were rejected? I’ve been worrying about how they view one year transfers

Hi everyone,

I am currently a second-year student at UC Santa Cruz. Only UC Santa Cruz and UC Riverside accepted me one year ago. I am here to share my story with other students. I hope my experience can be a reference of your college life, and you can share your experience with me.

Major: Physics & Math (I can only chose one during application)
GPA: 2.6(46 units); I am doing 18 units for Fall 2016, so by the end of this quarter I will have at least a 2.9 GPA, hopefully 3.0.
Courses: I have completed all the fundamental courses for my math major. I will finish the physics fundamental courses by Spring 2017.

Activities:
2014.8(14 days) I went to Imperial College London(ICL) for a science forum. We visited the labs and had a few lectures there. Our picture was published on Scientific American.

2013.7 I went to a summer camp in Harvard University for two weeks. We stayed with five Harvard students for a week and visited Boston. We also listened a lecture from a Noble Peace Prize winner.

Volunteers:
2016.3-2016.4 I was a board game tester for a famous board game company. I played the new designed board game with my friend and write comments on a forum. The job was secret, so I cannot tell the name of the company and the game.

2016.3-2016.5 I worked for a political organization, which is against the government of China(Mainland). I helped organized the email of the advocates.

Work experience:
2014.6-2014.7 I worked for a bookstore called the Bookworm. The Bookworm was established by a daughter of an Britain politician. Many famous authors were invited to give a talk in the Bookworm, and some well-known musicians were invited to give a performance. What I did is selling events tickets and books. Since I love literature and reading novels, the Bookworm became a place where I could read a lot of new novels after work. This was my first part-time job.

2015.6(7 days) I worked for real room escape. What I did was to introduce our rooms to the customers and lead them to start a new game.

2015.8(2 days) I worked for a board game exhibition. I learned how to play the new board games and lead the visitors to play them. The board game my friends and I were in charge of was one of popular games. In the end, the boss gave me a new board game for the gift.

Sports:

  1. Diving
2015.8 I finished my Open Water course with PADI. We(instructor and other students) went to Cebu, Philippines.

2015.9 I dove for fun in an aquarium in Beijing.

2016.3 I completed the Advanced Open Water at Catalina Island, Los Angles.

2016.4 I spent one day to clean a lake near San Francisco.

2016.6 I completed a special course—Enriched Air in San Francisco.

2016.8 I went to Seychelles on the Indian ocean. I stayed on a diving cruise for 7 days and made 10 dives.

2016.9 I completed my rescue diver course in Santa Cruz.

2.Badminton
2016.3 to now My friends and I played badminton with the club in UCSC. After my friends graduated from UCSC, we go to San Jose to play badminton about twice a week.

2008 I won the eighth(single gender, double) place in the competition in Beijing.

  1. Fencing 2015.9-2016.4 I joined the fencing club in UCSC. We practiced twice a week(4 hours). I discontinued for the reason of class schedule.
  2. Sailing 2016.8 I completed the basic sailing course with Cal Adventure at Berkeley Maria.

Research Interest
I am interested in topology and quantum theory.

During past decades, the development of theoretical physics has significant influence on geometry. The physicists brought the concept in topology into quantum theory in order to explain the structure of the object in physics. Microsoft established the Station Q to build topological quantum computer. The Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton has many physicists studying on knot theory(a branch of topology) and quantum theory. Apart from the combination of topology and quantum theory is fun and fascinating, it gives physicists new understanding of the behavior and structure of particles.

Although I am not able to go to the deep topic and read papers on this area, I feel like this topic is both popular and revolutionary. Since my majors are math and physics, I really like to do research in topology and quantum theory.

The topology courses provided by UC Berkeley are attractive to me. Elementary topology and Differential topology are the two courses provided to undergraduate students. I want to take those courses with UC Berkeley.

Unfortunately, UC Berkeley does not provide Quantum Field Theory to undergraduate students. I hope I can take graduate courses after I finished my major requirements.

Thank you for reading my experience. Good luck for your application!

I am very willing to hear your comments and voice.

I have a question about the deadline extension for transfer applicants. University of California says that additional majors will be closed after the priority application period – they provide a list of all the majors closing after Nov 30. Will these be the only majors closing or will more be announced on Dec 1 and later? I’m applying as an English major to Caand a variety of other UCs. None of the schools have listed English as a major closing after Nov 30. I’m just checking in here to see if I’m safe for applying after Dec 1. Thanks in advance.

@locampo None of that applies to UC Berkeley. All majors will be open until January 3rd. The “priority application period” has to do with TAG, which Berkeley doesn’t accept.

@GoBearsss, I submitted an application to be included in the berkeley mentorship starting point program a while ago by the september deadline. However, I haven’t received any kind of contact from a mentor yet. Could you help me out?

Hello All!

Can you chance me? Just submitted my application.

Transferring from California Community College
Also applying to Cornell, Brown, Stanford, Yale, Penn(Arts & Sciences), University of Virginia, USC, Dartmouth, and Columbia.

Major: Business Administration
GPA: 4.00
ECs: 1 finance internship, 1 supply-chain externship, club co-founder & president, tutor, and volunteer work. I intend on finding another internship for the winter. I am also Trilingual.
Essays: Pretty good, but one sentence in essay 4 was awkwardly phrased.
IGETC/Pre-reqs: All done by end of Spring 2017
Total Transferrable Units: 65+

@Beanstock1001 You sound competitive, but Haas is really, really, really hard to give someone any sort of “chance,” given that so many competitive students apply and so few are accepted. Obviously your stats are great, but your essays will be a big part of it. Beyond that, it’s a crapshoot.

Keep in mind that IGETC won’t satisfy the business requirements.

Hey all, I’m trying to decide whether or not I should bother applying to Cal as my gpa is quite low. If you can please chance me and tell me what you think,

@QueenA101 Go for it. You have really good ECs. Just write some damn good essay and explain your how your situation had affected you GPA, and I’d say you have a decent shot.
