UC Berkeley 2017 Transfer Thread

Hey all! Are you guys going to be taking advantage of the application deadline?

Does anyone know if there’s a limit for the amount of upper-division units we’re allowed to accumulate before transferring?

I’m planning to take 4 upper division courses, making for 16 total upper division units. I remember reading somewhere that the campuses have limits on upper-div units, I’m worried that 16 units will jeopardize my chances for admission. I can maybe get rid of one class, making for 12 units. I’ve already taken 1 upper div so I can’t do anything about that, and I need to take the other 2 to complete breadth requirements. sorry for repost

@GREATSTUDENTxD Upper division units can absolutely jeopardize your application. I don’t remember the rules because they’re confusing, but the less, the better.

Where are you taking upper division courses? Why aren’t you taking them at a community college? Breadth requirements aren’t required for admission, they’re required for graduation for Berkeley.

As I said, I don’t remember the rules specifically … but be careful with this.

@briank82 I can’t find any information on it online and the admissions office isn’t answering my calls…

Okay to anyone that’s an intercampus applicant worried about upper division units: the UC’s basically make no distinction between upper and lower div units if those units are from another UC. Just don’t exceed the unit cap.

@GREATSTUDENTxD There’s plenty of info on it online and on here, you just need to dig.

It will depend on the amount of upper division courses. How many lower division units will you have? You’re automatically capped at 70 for LOWER division, regardless of how many lower div units you have. If your upper division courses (which aren’t capped) put you over 80, you are ineligible for transfer.

So I ask again, why are you taking upper division courses? Where are you taking them? Why aren’t you taking them at a community college? And, as I said, breadth courses aren’t required for admission.

Playing around with this could very easily make you ineligible for transfer to UC Berkeley.

@briank82 I just called Berkeley admissions. Normally, for CC transfers, lower div units are capped at 70 semester units (or whatever the number is). Upper division units would push that 70 past the limit. However, since I am applying from another UC, all of my units are UC-transferable. This means that it doesn’t matter if my units are from lower or upper division courses; they’ll both push my unit count past the limit count if I’m not careful. I’m planning on having 16 upper division QUARTER units by spring (12 of them I need to complete UC Reciprocity, which is required for Berkeley). This won’t matter as long I don’t push past the 70 semester / X quarter unit limit, which I won’t. Not counting units earned by AP credit, I’ll have 90 something QUARTER units comprised of both upper and lower div coursework by spring.

@GREATSTUDENTxD Saying you were doing UC-UC, or where you were coming from (i.e. not a community college) would have gotten you a different answer.

Sounds like you should be okay though and you got the answer you needed.

@briank82 yeah, sorry for not being clear.

Did anyone have trouble separating their paragraphs on the application? When I save and submit, all my words just get compacted together…

Chance me!

Major: Anthropology, cultural and linguistic emphasis
GPA: 3.56
Units: 85 semester units completed units, 105 after spring
IGETC: Complete
Alpha Beta Sigma honors, invited to phi theta kappa but I didn’t wanna pay 90 bucks HA
ECs: Violin for 9 years
speak 4 languages
Working full time since 2013, part time before that

Applied: Berkeley, UCLA, Santa Cruz, Davis, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton, San Jose State, San Diego State

Cons: I have a LOT of W’s. Like probably…17… HOWEVER, I wrote killer personal insight essays and explained my struggle with bipolar disorder. I’ve turned it around since returning to school (im 25) and increased my gpa from 2.8 to 3.56 in one year.

Yes! My application is probably 95% done but I’m using the extension to make sure everything is perfect

Guys, What are my chances???

CCC student
Overall GPA 3.95
Major: Political econ
Igetc completion: Will be done this fall.
Major requirement: All A+ on Econ classes and A from a Math 10 class( Stat class)
but I got a B+ on Math 1 A class and I worry about it.
Now doing Math 1B this fall
(From assist.org, I didnt see Calculus classes as the major requirements. Just curious if I need to take Math 1C classes for this major)

E/C
Internship in the bank.
Volunteer at the library.
And Volunteer at other places.

Im also applying for UCLA, UCD, UCSD, UCSB and UCI this year.
Hope I can get in UCLA or UCB!!!

is it true that Berkeley won’t look at your application if you don’t complete IGETC? what if you have partial IGETC certification? i will have my major preparation finished by spring

@gosteelers123abc yeah, but I just hit enter twice instead of one and then it shifted to a normal sized space.

@otoribashi Not sure, but you know Berkeley is competitive. And any competitive applicant will have IGETC completed before the summer. Unless your an engineering major who focused on the Gen Ed of the specific college you’re transferring to due to the number of courses you have to take. I hear thats ok as well.

hey guys, do you think a low 3.6 at the end of fall is enough to get in for statistics?

it was higher before fall

@genieforuboi That is very weird. I will send you a PM so that you can provide your email address and that way I can have it forwarded to the right people.

Major: EECS
GPA: 4.0
Prereqs: Minimum prereqs completed by end of Fall 2016 semester
Recommended: Will have completed equivalents for CIS 61 A/B/C + a circuits course

Essays: 8-9/10. Talked about struggling with addiction/depression when I was younger (Im 28) which caused me to drop out of school, then getting treatment before eventually returning to school and getting straight As. Personal projects building sythesizers/sequencers and how it related to my creative side (music). And a bit more talking about things mentioned above in ECs.

Interested in how this compares to other EECS applicants
