Last year’s waitlist stats under new approach: 3,375 offers; 2,143 opt-ins; 437 admits
@popblock So you are saying, although this year, approximately 3500 students were offered the waitlist position (according to post #18 of this thread), less than 437 students will be admitted?
I called today and they told me they don’t release those numbers publicly, @collegeisgreat did they actually give you a number?
My son was wait listed for EECS so I imagine even less people get in off the wait list for that major, but who knows it’s all a mystery! I called the housing office today to find out if there would even be a chance of housing if a one is accepted from the wait list and the guy was very vague. When I called the admissions office the other day the person I got on the phone was yawning( sounded like a sleepy student!) and couldn’t give me any reliable info! Very frustrating!
Does anyone know how hard it is for an undeclared/pre-haas major to get off the waitlist?
in effect WAITLIST SUCKS!!!
If you read the Questions and Answers about the waitlist that were posted on myBerkeleyApplication, it’ll give you information about the waitlist. It said that 3,763 applicants were placed on the waitlist this year, and last year there was 3,375. From last year, over half the students offered space on the waitlist indicated to remain on it, and of those students, 435 students were offered admission.
@irmaadeline Did they say anything about this year’s admission? Will it be higher, the same or lower?
@tryhardclass I didn’t see anything about this year’s admission. I just read that they won’t be able to forecast any student’s chances of being admitted since they won’t know until early May if spaces are available.
Hey guys! I was also put on the waitlist. I was wondering if I should send them an email about my continued interest and also additional awards I have won after submitting the application. Will it change anything? Also to whom should I send this email if so?
@freedl21 arent you supposed to put that on the “appeal” section of the app?
Read this for any questions:
https://students.berkeley.edu/myberkeley/myberkeleyapp.asp?todo=waitlist-faq
Under: “Can I challenge the admission decision?” it specifically says -
“Any applicant who does not receive an offer of admission may submit an appeal however appeals from students on the waiting list will not be considered.”
Due to this, I only probably not send any additional information even though my senior year grades were good and I have additional awards too.
We should all discourage people from going to Berkeley! Since that will create more spaces for us after May 1.
Does anyone know how many people got admitted to Cal, as well as those put in the waitlist? Because I got waitlisted for both Cal and Santa Cruz. For all I know Santa Cruz said how many people they admitted in total as well as how many people they put into the waitlist if I recall clearly. : (
Usually this info is published during the third week of April, so I would look for it in a week or so.
They made about 300 more wait list offers than last year, but applicants have until the 15th to declare their interest to stay on the list.
This question has been asked previously, but a suitable answer hasn’t been provided:
Is it recommended for a waitlisted student to send a letter of continued interest to Berkeley?
Note that this is NOT a letter mentioning additional achievements. It will simply state how the school is a perfect fit and that no other place can compensate.
Also, this is NOT an appeal. This is just an email mentioning how Berkeley is a perfect fit in terms of academic life as well as student life.
If someone has talked to pervious waitlisted then accepted students, or has asked the admission department about it, please answer. Thanks in advance
No suitable answer or just not the answer you want to hear?
You must opt-in to the wait list, electronically. Otherwise, contact is not recommended by anyone at Berkeley, but that doesn’t stop students/parents/counselors from sending messages.
It doesn’t even cost you a stamp to send off an e-mail, so why not go for it?
I would not expect it to make a difference though, or even to be added to your file. You may get a polite response, but don’t hold your breath.
I was also waitlisted, and Berkeley is definitely my #1. I want to express that to the admissions department, but it seems from the above posts and their Q&A on the website that they won’t accept any other materials. If I sent a short e-mail anyways, would it help? Would it hurt? Or no difference at all? I just feel conflicted, and I’m really hoping to be accepted.
Here was something interesting we found. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/CC14/CC14-Directors_Combined-Freshman.pdf @dancella12 Admissions said about 3500, so not an exact number, but they said it was more than were put on waitlist last year. They said they expect more movement off the list, but at the end of the day, they don’t control how many kids submit the SIR and that is what dictates how many move off the waitlist. They said if you are waitlisted, they know they want you, they just need to find space. They said they do not add anything to your November application in an effort to keep the playing field even. There is the complexity with the kids who were admitted to the Spring program who may be trying to move up to Fall entry on campus. I did not get a clear answer on who gets priority, the waitlist kids or the Spring admits. I also wonder if the waitlist kids might be offered the Spring spots if those kids move to Fall. So if anyone else calls them and gets info on this, please let us know. Meanwhile, time to move onto plan B which sadly does not stand for Berkeley
