UC Berkeley appeal

I turned mine in on the 13th
got accepted for fall undecided engineering as an out of state student!!! I dont know if I am going to go though

You appealed because . . . ? just confused about your not knowing if you will go. is there anything we can answer to help you make your decision?

I guess because I am out of state and theres a $20,000 gap
i’m not sure if its worth it
my goals are for a top grad school for engineering
I appealed because i really wanted to go and had a lot of new info I’m still hoping I can go but me and my parents are talking about it
most of what I need is for housing which is kind of crazy at $13,000

Also kind of worried about the whole large class, hard to get research opportunities, and grade deflation thing

Housing cost is for the dorms, but you can find housing in the area for less than half that rate.

Plenty of research opportunities for anyone who wants them. The university is the top public research university, it does a staggering amount of research constantly.

The large classes are the ones that everyone takes, such as the first chemistry course, but even there you are also signing up for discussion sessions that have 25 or 30 in them, where a graduate student instructor answers questions and helps amplify what the professor taught in lecture. Once you get to the more advanced classes in a subject area, class size shrinks dramatically even in the lecture. You could easily be in a class with 15.

It is also incredibly easy to speak with the professors - they have open hours every week and they are all constantly complaining that not enough people visit.

Grade deflation - that is real. The university believes they are working hard to preserve the value and reputation by stopping grade inflation, working to keep the grade distributions similar to the way they were up until the end of the 1960s. This varies by the class, with some well known for applying the curve to ensure no more than 40% earn an A, but others are well know for handing out 85% or more A grades. There are sites like courserank, word of mouth and this forum that help you choose, at least among the optional courses, if grades are a big deal to you.

It is indescribable to be in a class learning about some breakthrough that the professor just discovered a month ago and has not yet even published the results paper, or to chat with Nobel winners. As one of the top grad schools in the country, it attracts the top graduates from schools around the world. The result is an almost unmatched set of people you learn from, work with, share with and have fun with.

Plus . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sL0fjrdViHw&feature=related
