Pay-by-race bake sale at UC Berkeley still on, student Republican group says - CNN.com

Berkeley's College Republicans are having a bake sale to protest a new California bill (passed in the House and Senate, has yet to be signed/vetoed by Gov. Brown) that would allow admissions officers to openly consider race, gender, ethnicity, and national origin in admissions decisions.

As an anti-AA person, I support this idea. Even if I didn't care about AA, I'd still find this a pretty ingenious idea (though not exactly the most original). Without turning this thread into a flame war, what are your thoughts about the protest?

People are getting way too angry about this. The fact is not having affirmative action is part of what has made California schools so good. Five out of the top ten public colleges are UC schools. They accept the best students not the students who necessarily make the class “more diverse”. They’re colleges and the focus should be on education.

Note I’m saying this as a minority (well half) applicant. Also we do need to be careful about not letting this thread get out of hand.

I think it’s sort of funny…maybe I’ll go and buy something Tuesday. Still, AA is good. It’d be great if steadily the amount of educated Blacks, Hispanics, and other ethnicities that do not have the best social status or wealth as a group could increase. It worked pretty well for women (only took a couple of decades, too).

What I don’t get is why white pay more than asians. It seems to me that asians are more represented in the intellectuals of our society than white. Just look at the RSI camp pictures.
