UC BERKELEY bridges Transfer Weekend

Can someone clue those of us who couldn’t make it in? WHY was it so fun? Did you meet a lot of transfer students? What did you think of them? Was everyone sure they were going to Cal next year? Any housing tips? Was the food good? Seriously, I am really interested :)

Ok, there were (someone help me here, I’m guessing) around 80 transfer students there. We had to play some pretty childish and ridiculous games to get to know each other and while I’m 23 and not used to playing patty cake, had a BLAST with these games once you actually got into it. Everyone was really friendly and conversation was really easy because we were kind of forced to get to know each other. There were a lot of really friendly and helpful volunteer students of Cal there to answer ANY question we may have. There were some questions that I didn’t even know I had until they started talking about the stuff they were involved in and I learned a WHOLE lot more about Cal than I thought I needed to. There were these seminar things we had to ask questions, we broke off into these groups to do activities relating to Cal life (There was a queer section, a leadership section, an activist section, an identity section, and a couple others to choose from. I really wish I could have gone to more than one, the one I went to was really cool but some of the others sounded really cool too). There was also a lot of really deep discussion and self examination through some of the activities we had that pertained more to discovering who we were and how other people thought than just to Cal life. I got to stay in a dorm one night which was really cool because I never had before. We got some free time to explore the city of Berkeley with some of the transfers and students so we got the inside scoop on a lot of cool restaurants and shops (there is one restaurant that gives you a free order of garlic fries if you bring in an A paper or assignment), where the cool places to hang out were, what the different vibes were on the different sides of campus, etc. We also had a field trip to SF where we had to do a “scavenger hunt” that involved some pretty crazy fun stuff that we had to take pictures/video of including: singing under the sea as a group, acting out a synopsis of Lord of the Rings, making a human pyramid, getting strangers to give us a dollar or join us in one of the items, imitating statues, etc. It sounds totally stupid and goofy but it was a blast. Had to wait around in the cold for quite a while that night, though, which wasn’t so fun but there weren’t really enough volunteers to drive everyone down there and back.

It was so weird to me that I had just met these people a couple days before I had to leave and I was really sad about leaving! I felt like bonded with SO many of these people and I’m so looking forward to seeing them in the fall, or even have some of them as roommates!

It was more than a networking/information event for me anyway. It was like a 3 day summer camp or something :P

@smartyskirt

I wanted to go to this sooooo badly! But sadly, I had to work :\ It sounds like it was tons of fun.

Maybe you could show me around Cal a bit this fall =P

- Transfer Weekend

Ahhhh lol I hate that I missed day 1 and had to leave early too :(. I’m not in any of these pictures.

@ smarty: It was awesome getting to meet you too! I think your description of Transfer “Weekend” was seemingly perfect! Everything you wrote made me nostalgic…even if I was just there earlier today lol. I was bummed that I didn’t get to say goodbye to you guys since everyone apparently left on the campus tour without me! haha jk. I had to go around 11:00 AM to get to school. haha just reflecting back upon our meeting in Mario’s is great. I was sitting at the table with some of the guys, and then one of them brought up that someone was looking for someone with Bose headphones. I was like…ughh…me? lol. It was awesome getting to know you! Psych majors ftw lol.

I think my favorite part of my (admittedly halved) transfer weekend was the discussion we had up at the Lawrence Hall of Science. For those that weren’t there, it was like 12:45 AM and we were all sitting in a big circle and just elaborating about our experiences and situations. It was calming and sort of therapeutic. I loved it. haha well it was freezing (after all we were on top of Berkeley), but imo it was more than worth it. There was an incredible view overlooking Berkeley. You could see the lights glistening from the bridge from afar and could see the Campanile below you.

No matter where you walked there were people excited to talk! I really liked how open everyone was. You could sort of bounce around from group to group and get to know everybody. We all talked about our majors, our high school woes, aspirations, etc. I had a blast. The games we played were pretty fun, and the cool air of San Francisco and Berkeley made everything more tangible and somewhat more powerful - at least in my opinion lol.

I swear if I go to Berkeley I’m going to join the Transfer Bridges Program and will help facilitate it for the next 2-3 years. That’s how much I loved it. I highly recommend that everyone here got to PASS, which is the Filipino Association at Berkeley. I’m not Filipino, but the girls that coordinated the Transfer Bridges Program are and they said that going to the PASS reunion or something could sort of serve as a Transfer Bridges Reunion as well :). Just a thought lol.

I was lucky enough to get to room with the guy (Jeremy) that created the Transfer Bridges Program last year (thank u AJ! lol), and he was really helpful and answered all of my questions. Anyway, it was a great experience, and everyone should go to the reunion!

YESSS! I so want to go to the reunion and help out for the next couple of years too. The only constructive criticisms I could give:
*Have on the application a ranking on where you’d prefer to stay. I wanted to stay in the dorms at least one night to know what it was like, but I know someone stayed in the dorms that didn’t want to, and another that wanted to that didn’t get to. If you have people from the co-ops, dorms, and off campus apartments, it would be cool if we got to rank them in order of where we’d like to stay.
*I dont like mexican food and we ate it 3 times. Enchiladas on Tuesday night, Breakfast burritos on Wednesday morning, and burritos on Wednesday night. I would have liked it if we could switch it up. Plus, eating a bunch of beans before sleeping over with a stranger?
*I would have gladly paid the $5 to take the bart to SF instead of drive. Since the driver’s situation was a bit difficult and I know a lot of people would have prefered to take the bart to experience/get used to it rather than drive, and it would have prevented us from having to wait around in the cold for as long as we did.
*We did several competitive games but didn’t get any prizes for them. I mean, we did get a lot of free stuff at the end (a tee shirt, a cal notebook and folder, lanyard, picture frame) but even if we got little bite-sized snickers or something it would have made the competition more worth it (I’m not a competitive person, but when chocolate’s involved…lol!)
*I REALLY wish I could have gotten the pictures back from our scavenger hunt. There were some pretty wicked pictures in the bunch!

It was an amazing experience and I had so much fun and all the info I got was so useful. I’m just putting this in writing in hopes that, when we put it on next year, we can make it even BETTER. I really hope that this becomes a more official thing in the years to come.

It is weird being on this site now that I can put some faces to the names

It was great meeting some of you. I’d also possibly like to get involved in the program once I get there :). Overall the thing that most impressed me about the entire event was the fact that the whole thing was run by students. I never saw an advisor, nothing. They were so good at it! I’ve never seen college students organize something like that before - it definitely doesn’t happen at my CC. So great job everyone, I loved it

Good times, everybody. Good times : )

It’s scary how much time some of the mentors put in during the three days. A few of them must have had no more than a combined five hours of between tuesday and wednesday. I definitely plan on getting involved next year.

See you all soon.

Aww, my friend just posted pictures of her weekend there with you guys (I see some familiar faces ahahah). Reading all this makes me wish UCLA had something similar! :'(

Looking through my friend’s facebook photo album with photos of the transfer weekend. Aww man I wish I could have gone SOOOOOO badly. :(
