UC Berkeley - Class of 2022 Applicants Thread

@ugradbiz
@collegefind1234

Did two of you apply early to Santa Clara University and get $20,000 scholarship per year?
What were your stats and ECs?
I would like to find out more as my kid, currently a high school junior, will be applying this year.

@collegefind1234 Yes, I applied Undeclared (Intending a major in Business Administration in the Haas School of Business). Great minds think alike haha! Congrats on your acceptances! We seem to have applied to a lot of the same schools. Are you considering IUB or SCU? They seem like very strong business programs, especially with Hutton Honors and scholarships.

@Jagomezpr Yes, it is. I was talking to my friend who is a Regent at Cal and is on the ROHP committee, and she referred to her and her friends as Pre-Haas not Undeclared, probably so people wouldn’t think they are completely undeclared haha.

@StevenToCollege Yes, I applied Early Action and my scholarship was a tad bit more than $20,000 since they gave me some loan. And I already posted my basic stats on this thread (Post# 483), but if you would like a more in-depth look, feel free to private message me!

@ugradbiz I kind of crossed IUB and SCU from my list. I agree - they have very strong business programs but I don’t think they compare with Cal or Emory. Emory is flying me to their 3-day program for Scholars, so I can get a better feel of the school - I’ve never been there. Cal is a great option financially since I’m in-state but what worries me is the likelihood to get into Haas is not high (at least that’s what I’ve heard). Do you know by chance how many actually get into Haas from the ones applying?

@collegefind1234 I see what you are saying, but in my opinion, I think that IUB and SCU do compare, especially since they directly admit you to their programs, and Kelley actually has some international prestige. But I totally agree with you, Cal and Haas are a bit better. My friend who is on the ROHP committee that is trying for Haas said there is about a 30% acceptance rate into Haas, but it should be higher because people apply without completing the pre-requisites or having the minimum GPA (so more like 40%??). But still, it is far from a guarantee and it is almost like redoing the college application process again as a sophomore! Apparently, many major in economics instead of Haas or if Haas doesn’t work out since you end up getting similar job opportunities. She also told me some people end up doing economics instead of Haas if they want to do finance or banking - not exactly sure why but that is what I have been told. I really like Cal but the grade deflation and not being guaranteed Haas scares me and makes me question if it is worth it. I am in-state too so the financial aspect of it is very very appealing. Have you heard anything about the Haas process? Also, did you sign up for a business Regents interview? I couldn’t make it the only weekend they were offering them, so now I have to interview with another concentration and I am worried it will hurt my chances, even though the Regents’ Department emailed me back and said it wouldn’t affect me.

@ugradbiz - agree with everything you’re saying and I have the exact same concern about getting into Haas and getting a decent GPA (I’ve heard at Cal getting 3.0 is considered really great - haha). That’s why I seriously consider Emory because they directly admitted me into their Business school. Still waiting for other schools’ decisions, but I know that scholarship is going to be out of question for Brown, Upenn, etc.

I did sign up for the Regents interview and was able to pick “business” - I’m in SoCal, so my interview will be in San Diego. I’m also thinking about going to the ROHP overnight just to get a better feel for the campus.

does anyone know if other UC’s (especially UCLA) offer “early” acceptance notifications for a regent’s or similar scholarship? if so would they be coming out soon?

@traveler2000 I think UCLA does- I think they have a regents and an alumi scholarship but its just an invite not an early admit; but i think your chances are high if you get either of them

@traveler2000 There was speculation that UCLA was coming out today

got accepted to uc berkeley and got the invitation for regents, but my selected major was molecular environmental biology in the college of natural resources. i’m still interested in the major, but i’m also debating whether to transfer to the college of letters and science during my first year. what are the advantages and disadvantages of staying in the college of natural resources?

@ugradbiz You say you applied “early action” but the UC system does not have an early action or early admission period. In your situation, you received an early notification based upon merit, which is commendable. Congrats, but just wanted to point out the error in your post above.

@muufeen a lot of people like CNR because its a small college style, prereqs can be less demanding than L&S, and because it’s a small college, getting time with advisors and stuff is a lot easier than in the giant L&S. Im an applicant too, but thats what I’ve learned as I’ve applied into CNR (the building is also beautiful lol).

@84stag They were referring to applying early action and receiving scholarships from Santa Clara

@Muufeen does it matter what college you are in your first year? The bulk of what you fulfill the first two years are gen ed requirements so it may not matter what college you are in freshman year. I would stay put and decide after your fresh yr or 1st sem soph year. Chances are transferring to L&S (depending on maj u choose) would be easier than switching to L&S now then having regret and deciding later you really do want CNR.

DD got an invitation email to visit UCB and find out more about FPF (Fall Program for Freshman). This event is on Friday Feb 23. We are OOS, so we might not go. Just out of my curiosity, how many of the OOS (non-Regents) are going? Is this an important event to attend?

@ivyforest No such email invitation here. :frowning: Were you already accepted?

@YoungOne4 Yes. Accepted on Feb 10 without Regents.

Big congratulations. That’s excellent.

@YoungOne4 Thanks so much!

@ivyforest

I might be mistaken, but I thought Fall Program for Freshman is mainly for those who are borderline or get off waitlist.
