Hey guys I’m new! So I’ve found that recently some of my friends have been getting LoR requests. I saw a thread on here speculating that the system may have done a quick sort of applicants based on stats and then sent out LoRs to “borderline” applicants. So far I have received nothing…should I be worried?
My stats:
Capped UC GPA: 4.05
Uncapped: 4.54 (took 10 AP’s in 10-11)
SAT: 2310
I know my capped is a bit below their range, but my uncapped is really high, as well as rigor, and I know they look at this. Also, my SAT is pretty good I think? I am just worried that my stats are so low that I have been automatically thrown out. Do you guys think this is the case? I applied to L&S btw…
also sorry if this is in the wrong forum, not sure…feel free to move mods
Berkeley depends mostly on GPA, so that may hurt a bit, especially if you’re OOS. Berkeley may uncap the UC GPA because of how competitive admissions are, so that would work in your favor.
@ap012199 I’m in-state. Yea, I’m pretty sure Berkeley uses uncapped. Also, I am in the top 9% of my class (ELC). I was just worried that my stats were so bad that they were like “No point giving this person a LOR request because they’re so bad anyway” … do you think that happened?
@poa34355 Lol, with your stats for in state that is way more than enough.
@boomboom123 haha i can only hope so…i’m worried because my capped uc gpa is lower than their avg. but i took a bunch of AP’s and i got a few B’s; i only hope they will consider the rigor of my courses?
Yeah, I agree w/ @boomboom123 The average ACT for my school was 29 and ~4.3W; I think you’ll get in. Honestly, for qualified CA applicants, I don’t think they read the essays and probably just glance at ECs.
@ap012199 Thanks, I sure hope I am qualified enough. Do you guys really think they don’t really read essays or look at EC’s? Because they claim they have their whole holistic approach with 14 factors and everything…
@poa34355 They do, UC Berkeley is probably the most holistic of all UCs. But I mean if you have such a strong GPA, your EC can afford to be a little bit weak especially because you are instate
A lot of kids in my grade have received requests but I haven’t. From what I’ve seen, they typically ask if there’s a weakness in your application. For instance, my best friend has a high GPA but a 1900 SAT. My other friend has a 2220 but has a lower GPA than me. I have a 2230, a 33 ACT, and a high GPA (one of the Valedictorians @ my school, there’s multiple) and haven’t received anything (I’'m guessing because both are high and I don’t think I’d be borderline). It’s probably a good thing to not get one, as long as your stats are competitive.
@yalehopeful017 hmm okay…would you say i am somewhat competitive?
@poa34355 They also look at your unweighted GPA. Is yours somewhere around 3.9? If so, you should be fine.
@uclahopefull no it’s around 3.8
@poa34355 Anything over 3.9 is competitive but you’ll be fine as long as it is over 3.7
@uclahopefull Do you think the 3.8 is going to kill me? I know it’s a bit below their in-state avg. (3.89) but I’m hoping my weighted (4.54, which is higher than their avg. 4.41) and my rigor will help me, as well as my SAT. Do you think they have already decided I’m not good enough, which is why they haven’t sent me a LoR request? That’s my worst fear.
You should be fine. UW GPAs are different for each school, some schools are more difficult than others. You are above the threshold, so much will rely on your essays and ECs. Plus, you have AMAZING test scores.
@uclahopefull Ok, thank you! I hope I will be fine. I also forgot to mention I have SAT Math II 780 and Bio M 720, if those help. And I am ELC, if they care about that at all. Thank you!
Yes, you are definitely competitive!
@yalehopeful017 Ok, thank you!!
I have a 4.0 unweighted, 4.5 weighted, 34 ACT, 2200 SAT, and I got requested for letters of rec. does this mean i’m borderline?
