I am confused between printed materials, (paid) expert, and UCB admission office’s answers. Normally I would just take the UCB admission, but the answer was so different from what I have heard everywhere. So I am asking more opinions.
My daughter is applying for 2018 fall transfer admission to UCB and few other UC campuses with Art (Letter & Science) major. She has;
Completed 59 UC transferable California Community College semester units with GPA 3.93 with no pass/no pass course (full letter grading system)
Completed 10 major prep courses (2 art history + 8 art practice)
Additionally two AP tests passed - Microeconomics & Environmental Science
For Math Requirement:
High school pre-calculus and scored above 600 on SAT’s math section.
One course each in UC transferable college Biology, Chemistry and Physics (only course that received a B).
For English Requirement:
1st English Writing course in Fall 2015
Two US History courses
Needs 2nd English Writing course
For Gen Ed Requirement:
Needs another course to finish IGETC - 3B, Humanities.
Question 1: With the SAT Math section score of 600+, did she already meet UC Transfer Math (Quantitative Reasoning) requirement without ever taking a college math course?
Question 2: If yes, then would meeting math requirement without taking a college math course significantly hurt her chances?
Question 3: If she has to take the 2nd English Writing in Spring 2018 instead of Fall 2017 because classes are full, would it significantly hurt her chances?
Question 4: Can she complete IGETC in Summer 2018 instead of by Spring 2018?
On your question 1, the SAT math section score of 600 satisfies the L&S QR requirement. However, if she chooses to complete IGETC, that is determined by the community college (which may require a math or statistics course or AP credit), and must be completed by the spring term preceding enrollment.
@ucbalumnus Thank you for the answer for Q 1! It matches with UCB’s answer so now I can comfortably take it! She can meet the IGETC math requirement with AP test next Spring - if that’s considered as completing by Spring for IGETC requirement.
Any idea on my other questions?
For example, #4, if she met the option “1)” for admission requirement by Spring, can she still complete her IGETC as well in the Summer 2018? UCB doesn’t take partial IGETC and choosing 7 breadth option will result taking two more courses.
For personal reasons, it would be possible, but very difficult to take another college course together in the Spring if she has to also take the 2nd English course.
Question 1: With the SAT Math section score of 600+, did she already meet UC Transfer Math (Quantitative Reasoning) requirement without ever taking a college math course?
[color=red] They don’t look at SATs for transfers. Don’t submit them. She needs to fulfill math with a course by this fall for best result. This MUST be fulfilled. Don’t wait until spring is my suggestion. Waiting is a risk. Also, if she wants to TAG, it must be completed by fall.
On another note, are you allowed to take an AP exam in college?
[color=black]Question 3: If she has to take the 2nd English Writing in Spring 2018 instead of Fall 2017 because classes are full, would it significantly hurt her chances?
[color=red] If she plans to TAG she needs it done by fall. Otherwise spring is OK - not ideal, but will likely not hurt her chances.
[color=black]Question 4: Can she complete IGETC in Summer 2018 instead of by Spring 2018?
[color=red] No.
@ohm888 Thanks for your help. On question 1. Both UCB’s transfer admission officer (one they listed as main contact on UCB website) and @ucbalumnus said SAT score would suffice. May I ask why would you say otherwise please?
Obviously, I could be wrong. But I believe they don’t accept SATs from transfers (unless something has changed), so that’s where you got me. I’m not sure there’s a place in the transfer application to even add that info. To get the best answer I would email berkeley and ask. I don’t want to steer you in the wrong direction.
Update: I’ve just been looking and inadvertently came across this re English - best to complete both by fall, as well.
SAT scores or anything from high school are not required for UC junior transfer applicants, but at least some of those things can be used to fulfill low level base requirements, so there is presumably a provision to accept them. Best to verify by asking UC directly if you are not sure about it.
And this CCC says they refuse to look at SAT scores period. In this case, it would seem you would not get IGETC sign-off: https://www.redwoods.edu/counseling/FAQ
You can’t use SAT scores to satisfy your CCC IGETC requirements. Look at your CCC catalog which is probably available online if you don’t have a hardcopy.
I have talked transfer officers at several UC campuses then. It seems meeting quantitative reasoning requirement with SAT math is USB specific thing, at least formally. And CCC IGETC can be met with a different way. For example, my DD’s CCC confirmed that it will certify IGETC with her high school transcript with a Pre-Calculus course.
UCB officer, over the phone, said UCB will take DD either as a transfer for 2018, or a freshman when she will get her (sort of 2nd) high school diploma for 2020, at which time he sees her as a really really strong candidate even though he can’t guarantee it.
For now, DD is rethinking about that transfer option, now that a new year started. Seems high school might be too enjoyable to end prematurely.
Entering college as a frosh may also be advantageous. As a frosh with large amounts of useful college credit, she can try to graduate in two years, but she is not required to, unlike as a transfer student.
I strongly urge you to get a second opinion from CCC AND check their catalog. I don’t know of any CCC that will take a HS math course to fulfill the math IGETC requirement unless tested out with AP test or CLEP.
@calmom17, It’s done. She got an official written answer for the IGETC from her CCC’s counseling department, after it reviewed her official HS transcript.
