my GPA right now is a 3.86. I have been to a regular university, but will be attending Community College next semester.

I do not think I completed the IGETC, as I am missing some "arts/humanities" courses.

I am an Astrophysics major, and I will be missing 2 prereqs, even though my CC offers them. Linear Algebra, and Physics 8C.

Will have a little over 62 credits.

Courses currently taken/taking: ( Some are from university, some will be from CC)
Chemistry I, Chemistry II, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, Multivarible Calc, Differential Equations, English I, English II, History Pre Civil War/Post Civil War, Poli Sci Int Relations, Poli Sci Global Trends, Physics 8A, Physics 8B, Astro 10, Astro 20, Freshman Seminar, Adv. Piano

I think I am, but it's so confusing reading on these boards about prereqs and IGETC
i.e one has to completed if another is not?

as far as I know the IGETC is a requirement. I don’t think you can transfer without it.

stack up the humanities classes next semester. I took 3 of them online this semester, 19 units total. I’d recommend you do something like that if you can handle the work load.

It is my understanding (a CC counselor told me this) that the IGETC is not a requirement. All it does is make it so you don’t have to take any further lower division GE work once you’re at a UC. That extra work typically adds another quarter of time until you graduate.

That said, if you take the humanities courses next Spring you can still complete IGETC. Also, completing your major pre-requisites is very important so you just try to fit in those other two classes - perhaps in a Winter session?

The most common reason for an applicant to be denied is because they did not meet the prerequisites. You will not be accepted unless you have taken/are taking/plan on taking the courses before transfer. Also, you need to check when they have to be completed by. I believe most colleges require the courses be completed by the end of the Spring semester if you plan on starting in Fall.

"IGETC is most helpful to students who want to keep their options open those who know they want to transfer but have not yet decided upon a particular institution, campus or major. Certain students, however, will not be well served by following IGETC. Students who intend to transfer into majors that require extensive lower-division preparation, such as engineering or the physical and natural sciences, should concentrate on completing the many prerequisites for the major that the college screens for to determine eligibility for admission. (See IGETC Considerations section below.)

IGETC is not an admission requirement. Completing it does not guarantee admission to the campus or program of choice."

It says no, but I always get different answer on this board. Which is correct? Also where does it say that ALL prerequisites MUST be complete? I can’t find that anywhere.

Also this makes it more confusing as well.

"1. Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4. No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/Not Pass.

Complete the following course pattern requirements, earning a grade of C or better in each course: Two transferable college courses (3 semester or 45 quarter units each) in English composition; one transferable college course (3 semester or 45 quarter units) in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning; four transferable college courses (3 semester or 45 quarter units each) chosen from at least two of the following subject areas: the arts and humanities, the social and behavioral sciences, and the physical and biological sciences."

Apparently those are the bare minimum admission requirements. I say bare minimum. So I’m not quite sure where people are getting the mandatory prereq/IGETC requirements from.

Did they update it recently and just not update the webpage or something?

You’re absolutely right (from what I understand). IGETC/Major Prep done are not requirements, but highly encouraged and will increase your chances of admission. Major prep is especially important when applying for impacted majors.

From UCLA’s site:

"Progress towards completion of major preparation requirements by spring prior to transfer (see below).

There may be additional lower division requirements that students may complete–either at their current institutions or at UCLA. Should a major not have specific prerequisites, we expect students to demonstrate interest in academic study by completing coursework related to the major."

and then

“The importance of preparatory coursework cannot be stressed enough! Link below to see the preparatory courses for your intended major.”

So not specifically called out as required, you are encouraged greatly to do so.

“It says no, but I always get different answer on this board. Which is correct? Also where does it say that ALL prerequisites MUST be complete? I can’t find that anywhere.”

I’m probably gonna sound like a dick but it’s only because of how frustrated I am by these prerequisites. In general the IGETC fulfills the GE courses needed to transfer. Unless you want to go to Haas at Berkeley… it’s one of 3? schools within the colleges that won’t accept it. You need to go on Assist.org and see what you need for your major.

Example…

Articulation Agreement by Major
Effective during the 09-10 Academic Year
====Economics, Lower Division B.A.====

College Admission Requirements for Transfer Students
This major is offered by the College of Letters and Science (L&S).

By the end of the spring term preceding fall enrollment at Berkeley,
you must complete either:

1) The L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language; OR
2) IGETC

In addition:
Complete as many lower division major requirements (see below) as possible
before transfer.
This major may require specific coursework be completed prior to transfer.

In general:
completion of L&S Requirements (or IGETC), plus
strength of academic preparation, and
grade point average
are the primary selection criteria for admission.

besides the first, last, and second to last post, i haven’t read any of this thread, so excuse me if you already said this but have you fulfilled (or will you by next semester) the L&S Requirements in Reading & Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and
Foreign Language?

if you arent hitting your igetc humanities requirements you almost definitely aren’t hitting your reading&comp requirements. you should check for specific classes though, people here aren’t going to do the work for you.

As far as I’ve read, I have already completed the L&S requirements. It says 1 course in Quantitative Reasoning…is that right?

And what is the exact attitude I have? I’m trying to find out if IGETC is a requirement. Just because I’m questioning everything doesn’t mean I have an attitude.

Even the things they quoted (see post above) says it is not a requirement, so I’m still kind of puzzled as to why previous posts, as well as people in this post, say IT IS a a requirement.

Like I said before, is universityofcalifornia.edu not updated or something? Because it clearly states that IGETC is geared towards people who do not know what major they want, but want to explore more possibilities towards a variety of courses.

and assist doesn’t work for me since my first 3 semesters are not at a CCC

It seems to me that no IGETC isn’t required but recommended where offered because they want you to graduate on time. So people are saying collectively that it is a good idea to get it if you can.
