I dubiously posted this in the wrong sub-forum. I know an admin can move it themselves, but this is really urgent so I figured I'd post it again here myself:

I am plan transferring to UCSB in the fall but have some questions over the IGETC form.

How important is it to meet all IGETC requirements? I have completed almost all the courses - all I have left is one course in 1B (I took AP). Critical thinking, Area 2 Math requirement, and one lab in 5A.

To transfer to UCSB, do I really need ENG 202, 203, or PHIL 115? Will UCSB count other ENG classes like 205, 210, 211, 215 even though they are listed under humanities?

I did the assist.org thing and ENG 202, 203 weren't listed by the other ENG classes were. I don't plan on seeking a competitive major - just political science or history.

Completing all of the IGETC requirements is a huge advantage over other applicants (in the lower-mid UCs). I’d suggest looking for equivalent classes at other colleges if you’re having trouble finding them at yours.

I don’t understand. Are these ENG classes transferable or not? UCSB is the only UC school I want to go to. If I get rejected I’ll just apply the next year. Are all IGETC classes transferable to UC general majors? Some of them aren’t listed on assist.org.

the community college I go to the one of the largest in California.

With a major like history of poly sci, there is no reason you shouldn’t complete IGETC and it is VERY important to complete it.

We don’t really know what “To transfer to UCSB, do I really need ENG 202, 203, or PHIL 115? Will UCSB count other ENG classes like 205, 210, 211, 215 even though they are listed under humanities?” means. What section of the IGETC are you referring to? Are those classes at SB or at your CC?

I’m a little confused about your post. Are you transferring in the Fall like you said or do you mean that you are applying in the Fall?

Are you not planning on completing certain IGETC classes ever? Or do you mean you just haven’t taken them yet but will take them this upcoming Fall and Spring at your CC? Or were you already accepted and were missing some?

If you could be a little clearer on what exactly you’re asking, I can probably help you.

My best guess is that if the classes do not show up on assist, then they cannot count as requirements for your major, however, they will, most likely, count as transferable credits.

ENG 202 and 203 are not listed under assist.org however they are listed as “critical thinking 1B” for IGETC guide.

I already have AP so I only need one more. I was wondering if the other ENG classes, such as 205, 210 (significantly easier and more interesting) would count as an english credit but they are listed under 3B. Humanities which I’ve already fulfilled.

Okay I guess you’d need the IGETC form to see what I’m talking about. ENG classes 205, 210, etc…are listed under Area 3B humanities and are transferable for some specific majors according to assist.org.

But ENG 202/203, which are 2 of the 3 only classes listed for Area 1 English communications requirement, are not listed at all on assist.org.

Will UC accept these classes? I’m so confused here.

I would like to transfer in the Fall but it’s all up in the air for now. I took several classes in high school but then I found out they weren’t transferable. I thought I would be able to transfer last Fall but I was 20 units SHORT.

How important is IGETC? I only have 3 more IGETC classes to fill - one English, one lab, and one math. I’ll be taking the English this semester and the math/lab in the spring.

I’m trying to be as clear as possible. I don’t understand why some english classes are listed under English but others are listed under humanities. That is totally stupid.

If a course does not show up on assist.org, does that mean it is not transferable??? For example, POSC 102 - which I completed with a grade of A - is listed in Area 4 of IGETC. But on assist.org, it doesn’t show up under any major at all.

So are they transferable units? I was told they were. I thought all the classes listed on IGETC are transferable! Some people have suggested I pursue other UC schools but I am set on UCSB. I don’t want to go anywhere else.

How do you expect to transfer in the Fall if you haven’t applied yet lol? IGETC is very important unless you are majoring in something unit heavy or that has a lot of pre-requisites (Engineering, some Sciences, etc). But, if you were to apply this November (2011) for UCSB Fall 2012, you just need to complete the IGETC classes by the end of Spring '12. Assist.org isn’t perfect but even if you don’t complete IGETC, you need to finish your 2 English classes and transferable math class.

Let’s start here.
0. Stop tripping about the ENGL classes for a second.
What CC do you go to?
Tell me ALL the classes you’ve taken at your CC. (Just the HIST 101 part… not the description)
Tell me what AP exams you have taken (if any) and your score.
Let me know what classes you plan on taking in the Fall at your CC.
Did you fulfill the Foreign Language requirement?
Did you fulfill the American Institutions requirement?

Oh and you can’t use a class to satisfy a breath requirement and simultaneously satisfy one of your English requirements. The 2 English class requirements are specifically a Critical Thinking class and a Composition class. You can’t just take an arbitrary Engl class, though there are often a few options for the 2nd one you have to take. On the other hand, what you’re seeing are other Engl classes that fulfill only the Humanities requirement so if you’re missing a class from 3B, you could take one of those but you will have to take an ADDITIONAL Engl class for the 2nd portion of the Engl IGETC section.

That is your school form… in other colleges classes have different names and numbers. At least upload your school form here, or tell everyone exactly where you go so we can help, instead of bragging that the school is the biggest in Cal…

About which classes will transfer and which won’t, consult your school class catalog. I think every school has one, and they list down which course is UC-trans, CSU-trans, both or no credit. Assist is reliable but sometimes they do not update the recent changes.

I wasn’t “bragging.” I was simply saying the school I go to is very large and offers a lot of classes compared to most community colleges. For privacy sake I’d honestly prefer not to give the name of my community college as silly as that might sound.

killmyentourage, thank you for the response. I am getting all the info you asked but it will take some time for me to respond.

OMG, then how can we help you T____T. The IGETC Form varies from school to school. Google your school name + “IGETC” and paste that link here so we can see what classes are you talking about. But if you still want to keep it a secret for God’s sake, well then …

I may be incorrect but do you go to Palomar College? I believe it’s a rather large college with similar class names. I also saw that it had an incomplete list of classes on ASSIST.

I don’t know how you expect anyone to help you with your class selection if you can’t even give the name of your school. It’s the internet, pick a random screen name and do whatever you want anonymously. No one can track you down by the name of your school, lol.

Based on what I’m understanding from this. Yes you do need one of those classes to have IGETC completion. Yes, any class on IGETC is transferrable credits at a UC (correct me if I’m wrong).

That specific area is critical thinking and they want one of those three classes because they’re all based on critical thinking, one is english through nonfiction, one is english through fiction, and one is a philosophy critical thinking class. Other English classes cannot count for that part.

You do need to do one of those three if you want IGETC complete on your application.

CINE 100 - A
CINE 122 - A
POSC 110 - A
POSC 102 - A
ANTH 100 - A
Math 50 (not transferable) pass/fail
Math 60 (not transferable) pass/fail

I also took a journalism class, two radio and television classes, and another arts class but found out none were transferable so it was all a waste of time.

I have a score of 5 AP English Language Comp (not literature) and 3 for AP US history

I haven’t finalized my schedule yet since I’m still unsure about the ENG courses. Registration does not open until Tuesday (5th).

I have fulfilled my foreign language requirement and I don’t know what the American Institutions requirement is.

So I’m stuck taking crappy ENG 203 where I have to read 4 boring books and write a 15 page pointless paper? My school has Phil 115, that seems like a better alternative to ENG but the IGETC lists PHIL115+(F92). What the frack is F92? The course list has PHIL115 but not F92.

My school doesn’t do that. They list courses by AA, CSU, and IGETC. It’s ■■■■■■■■.

Okay, Palomar. I hope I can edit this threads later because I’m extremely paranoid about my anonymity.

So, what is the deal then? I really want to know what this F92 is. PHIL seems so much more easier than another English class.

I’ve been to a counselor before. It is too late now because registration opens on the 5th and you can only make an appointment a week in advance. I’ve seen two different counselors and both gave me confusing advice. Apparently one of the RTV classes I took in HS was okay for UC, and then later was no longer transferable.

I do plan on seeing one but all classes will be filled up before the earliest chance.

I go to Palomar too…it’s no big deal dude there are thousands of people there. No one has a clue or cares about which one you are.

The F92 stuff is not really relevant to you…I believe it’s talking about years for which those classes changed on IGETC. So only relevant if you took the specific class in 1991 or earlier. Which I doubt.

To sum up: You have to have one of those 3 classes to finish that area and have a completed IGETC which improves your transfer prospects a lot. That is also an area that you cannot AP test out of.

Alright. So I’m not sure if you’re confused about the application process, but yes, you apply to UCs or CSUs about 10 months before you actually start attending. You can only submit the UC application between November 1-30th (for the following Fall) and depending on the UC, you will find out where you’re accepted sometime between March-early May.

For IGETC, you need to complete:
1A - English Composition (which you said you completed with your AP test correct? Double check on this and make sure that you can use your AP score to satisfy this.)
1B - ENGL 202, 203, 215 (I would recommend 202 because this is the class that most people take and will have a lot of sections, also 203 is literature based and in my opinion = more boring)
2A - UC transferable math class (MATH 100 or anything higher)
3A - CINE 100 & 122 already fulfilled this area
3B - Pick one class from the Humanities list on assist.org (does not overlap with 1B)
4 - This section is broken down into 10 areas (A-H). POSC 102 & 110 are both in area H. You need an additional class in a DIFFERENT area (A-G or I-J)
5A - Pick one class from Physical Science list WITH lab (you must take a lab since you didn’t take the Lab with ANTH 100 --unless you did)
5B - ANTH 100 fulfilled this area
Language - 2 years of a single language in HS with acceptable grades
AmerHist/Inst - Information found [University of California - American history & institutions](http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/counselors/graduation-requirements/history/index.html) though you probably completed this requirement in HS.

Overall, for the IGETC, you need to take a class in 1B (ENGL), 2A (MATH), 3B (HUM), 4 (not H), 5A with Lab (PHYS SCI) and make sure you’ve completed the Language and AmerHIst/Inst requirement.

As for your major preparatory coursework, what you need to do is sit down with an Excel file and use assist.org to list all the potential classes you would have to take under different majors at each of the UCs you are interested in. For Ex.

If you wanted to go to UCI and major in History:
2 HIST Courses from different regions - Ex. HIST 101 (American Hist) & HIST 105 (West Civ Hist) In this case, you could search for if the 3 on your AP test would exempt you from having to take HIST 101. Also, HIST 105 also fulfills area 3B (HUM) so you could be completing one of your major pre-reqs and additionally completing part of your IGETC.
1 PHIL Course - (100, 101, 103, 105, 130, 135, 136) These also satisfy area 3B.
Additional Hist courses.

Though if you wanted to go to UCI and major in PolSci:
POSC 100 - (In area 4H so does not overlap any additional IGETC requirements)
POSC 101 - (also in area 4H)
1 Comp Sci Course - (CSWB 170 or CSCI 222) 170 would be much easier.
Math 140 - Calc (would also count as transferable math course)
Math 120 or PSYC/SOC 205 - Stat

Conclusively, you need to take the IGETC classes I mentioned above in addition to the major coursework pertaining to the UCs you would like to go to (numerous UCs will have comparable requirements but may vary slightly). Since you need 60 units by the end of Spring semester, count how many you still need (Ex. if you only have 20 UC transferable units so far, you need 40 between Fall and Spring semester = take 20 units this Fall and 20 in Spring). As for Fall semester, you should definitely register for a UC transferable math class (anything 100 or above – try to take the Math placement test again if you’re still stuck at lower level non transferable math) and your 2nd Engl class (or the 1st if your AP score for some reason doesn’t count).

My GPA isn’t 4.0 because I got a D in my first attempt at math 50 and a B in journalism. However, I re-took Math 50 and got a B. But I was told those classes won’t show up on my official transcript anyways because they aren’t transferable and UC acceptable right?

Frack.

Okay, I enrolled in Phil 115 - it is listed along with ENG 202 and ENG 203 as part of Area 1 English communications. Is this right? Do I need to change my schedule?

I was told by counselor the AP score checks out. I’m already taking a 3B class this summer and should get an A or B (HIST 105) so area 3 should be taken care of.

For area 4, I was told everything was done. I have POSC 110, POSC 102, and AP US history. My IGETC form doesn’t say “10 areas.” Just “3 courses required from at least two disciplines.”

5A, yes I know I need a lab and will take one next spring.

I have 2 years of HS French so I have that requirement fulfilled. I don’t know what is this American Institutions Requirement is. When I met with the counselor (two times) she/he never said anything of it.

I don’t want to go to UCI. OMG the campus is full of adults. And very dead. No offense. I want to go to Santa Barbara.

Here is my schedule:

Math 60
MSC 100
PHIL 115
POSC 101

Now when summer is over I’ll have my humanities requirement done. So, MSC is just more transferable credit. Math 60 is remedial so won’t count towards anything. PHIL 115 is listed under 1b critical thinking (along with ENG 202, and 203) am I safe here? I’m horrible at math and have been diagnosed with an official “math disability” as weird as that may sound.

So far that is 9 transferable units for Fall semester (excluding math). With budget cuts my school has caped all classes to 19 units. However I can switch out PHIL 115 (3 units) for ENG 202 (4 units) if you say it is the wrong move. But the ENG 202 class is 40 minutes longer than PHIL and the teacher doesn’t have the greatest reviews.

I’m limited to M/W/F classes. The “unofficial transcript” online blackboard crap is bogus because it factors in classes that weren’t transferable, retaken, and ignores AP scores. So I don’t know my “official GPA” but I don’t have anything below a C for transferable classes. I’m not sure if a score of 3 for US history is okay with UCSB but the counselor said it was.

I’m thinking of taking one more class which would bring my total units to 12-13 units. So I’ll have 41 units by the end of Fall 2010. My counselor put AP as 10.5 units I don’t know where the .5 comes from.

However, she counted JOUR 101 but on assist.org JOUR 101 isn’t shown so assuming she is wrong that brings me down to 37/38 units by the end of spring.

How many units do I need when I transfer? If 60 units truly a deal breaker? I would have 60 if the half dozen RTV/arts classes I took in HS were transferable which I was told they were when I took them!

So, recap:

*How many minimum units do I need when I apply to transfer in November?
*Is 60 units a red-line issue? If have 50 is it automatic reject? I am “officially” disabled for what it’s worth. Math has dragged me down and was forced to drop several classes last semester because it took so much time to get through it.
*If I am accepted, hypothetically, can I defer for 6 months for personal/medical reason? Or any reason?
*Is PHIL 115 good to go?
*What is American Institutions requirement? I couldn’t find anything at UCSB or my CC for it.
*Any other suggestions?
*Is this JOUR class transferable? It is JOUR 101.

I’m guessing HS courses don’t matter at all. I had a 4.0+ weighted and 3.8 unweighted but I was told that no longer matters. I probably shouldn’t have even bothered with stupid honors classes and focused more on polishing my math abilities.
If worst comes to worst I guess I’m stuck applying for Fall 2013 right?

1) I’m not sure if there is a minimum for the time of your application. You must have 60 transferable units by the time you complete your Spring semester (Spring 2012 for you since you’d transfer in Fall 2012) or, if you’re a few units short, you could take some classes in Summer 2012 as well.

2) You have an entire year to complete 10 units from the time that you are positing this. It should not be an issue.

3) If you have a very good reason, then you can defer your admissions for 6 months (dependent on the school). *You would still apply to the UCs this November, 2011, for the following Fall, 2012. Upon admission to the school, you can email or call your admissions counselor (their contact info, etc. will be provided to you once you’re admitted) and explain your situation and the reason for which you want your admission deferred.

4) I’m not sure. Someone from Palomar could probably clue you into which courses transfer properly and for what they are articulated. From what I see of your school’s IGETC form, however, Philosophy 115 does not count towards any major IGETC requirement. In addition, it does not articulate to any major prerequisite at UCSB. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong or if I just don’t see it.

Despite it not being on the IGETC form or articulating to a major prereq, it may still be UC transferable.

5) Your school doesn’t seem to have American Institutions requirements and has very history requirements (which only apply to CSU transfers/applicants).

6) There is no reason for you not to apply this November for admissions in Fall 2012 unless you can’t complete 10 more units (I’d suggest taking more than that for security’s sake) in 2 semester (Fall 2011 and Spring 2012) + summer 2012 intersession if available.

7) It may be transferable, but I doubt it since UCSB doesn’t even seem to have a Journalism or general Journalistic major.

Lipper, I’m not sure if you’re reading my posts. PHIL 115 IS listed under IGETC requirements alongside ENG 202 and 203 but not on assist.org. But neither does ENG 202. Critical thinking only lists three optional classes: ENG 202, 203, and PHIL 115.

I’ve also enrolled in PHIL 100 3 units in addition to my other classes. Are you positive this PHIL class isn’t covered even though they fracking list it in IGETC requirements? WTH?

I don’t know what form you have but I’m looking at the IGETC Advising Guide and Course list. Also, PHIL 115 is listed at IGETC classes in their catalog:

If UCSB lets me take a summer class then I’ll be good to go.

The real question is how will they see GPA when I apply in November? I’ll have a 3.0+ but I don’t have all my IGETC classes fulfilled however all my classes will be done by enrollment next year. Do they count future classes or just classes I have taken?

If I were to apply in November I’l literally only have barely 30-40ish units and no math/lab.

Do you apply in November and then they look at all your stats by the next fall? So confusing!
