UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD

Hello! My dream school is UC San Diego. I visited this summer and fell completely in love with the campus. I applied to UCLA because I visited there as well, and I liked it, but not as much as UCSD, and applied to Berkeley just because I felt like it. I’m an out-of-state student, so I will tell you about my academic history, and let me know if I have a chance!

UC GPA: 3.92
ACT Composite: 30
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
I’ve taken four AP classes and two dual-credit (through a community college) classes. I also have a language credit from the Concordia Language Villages (summer foreign language camp).
EC: Competitive All-Star cheerleading, varsity cheerleading, show choir, jazz choir, golf, bowling, and I work two part-time jobs currently. I also attended the Russian language village of Concordia for seven years as a camper, participating in the high school credit program, and I have worked there for the last three years. I am an NHS member, and I also volunteer at the local humane society.

My first essay is very strong, at 650 words. My second essay is only 350, given the 1,000 word limit, but it is also written fairly well. Please let me know if I have ANY chance at these schools, because I don’t think I can wait 6 more months to find out!

I think you have a shot at UCSD given your ACT and ECs. Berkeley and UCLA will be a lot harder because of your OOS status where the stats of those individuals tend to be much higher than a 30 ACT and 3.92 GPA.

UCSD - high match
UCB/UCLA - reach

Agree with @uclaparent9 assessment of your chances.

Good Luck.

What is your intended major?

I’m double majoring in economics and Spanish, minoring in Russian.

^ I will never trust any of those software, and their assessments are far away from reality (not that we humans can do much better!).

@santaclara That software is useless. I have a 4.0 UC GPA and a 33 ACT, and it said UCI and UCSB were safeties. Mid-Level UCs are not safeties for anyone, even people with perfect everything. Plus, it is not possible to completely gauge one’s chances for the UCs because of how unpredictable they are. All the chances that people give (or at least the ones I give) are theoretical.

@LilRussian UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are reaches because your GPA is low, and your test scores aren’t high enough to offset that GPA.

@QuiteAverage90 you don’t think my ECs, and strongly written essays will help? I come from a very cultural background and I was thinking the diversity would help somewhat. I’m not really worried about UCLA or Berkeley, it’s really just UCSD.

I think your UC GPA is too low for those schools. They all are reaches, but again, you are not applying to an impacted majors so this might help.

@Ballerina016 so you think I have a potential chance at getting into at least one of those schools because I am going for a pretty common major? For example, if I were going into a pre-med or engineering major, something with a lower amount of students involved, I would have less of a chance.

I also want to add I received a 4 on APHUG, and 3 on AP Spanish

please please please help me out! I went back to UCSD this weekend and fell in love all over again.

i would really appreciate some feedback :)))))))

anything would be helpful!

What is the point of assessing your chances now? The UC application window has closed, and so it’s all over but the waiting. I’m inclined to agree that UCLA and Berkeley were big reaches, and UCSD is also a reach (but not impossible) for you. My son got into UCSD from out-of-state two years ago with stats that weren’t dramatically different from yours. He had a 31 ACT, 2060 SAT, and his UC-weighted GPA was over 4.0 (not much, though; his unweighted GPA was only 3.3-3.4). He was in a full IB-diploma program with additional APs (5s on APUSH and APHUG). He applied for non-impacted majors, and had fabulous “leadership” ECs. He was rejected from Berkeley, and did not apply to UCLA. I also heard that all the UCs became more selective last year.

@woogzmama that’s true, but the next 4 months are still going to be nerve-wracking, either way. Thank you for your reassurance in regards to your son’s statistics. Thinking back on it, I should not have applied to Berkeley, I think I just did it to do it. No chance though. A girl from my high school was accepted into UCLA 2 years ago with a 28 on her ACT, so I thought I may have a shot there. But if your son, with similar scores to my own, got into UCSD, I have a small chance! Thanks!

I think that UCLA and Berkeley focus more on GPA than on test scores. Did the girl you know have outstanding grades?

@woogzmama she had a 4.0, I would assume. Or close to it.

You have a good chance of getting into UCSD
