UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD CS transfer admissions.

Im unclear about the UC schools requirements for a transfer student outside of the California school system. I went to NYC HS and NYC college.

For example UCLA’s page for transfer admissions for computer science says courses required before transfer include calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, calculus-based physics, and general chemistry. UCSD and UC Berkeley have similar requirements except their pages say “Recommended Courses.”

Im currently attending CUNY Hunter College, recently finished my second semester. I plan on transferring after my 4th semester (so transferring for Fall 2016) but as of now I have yet to take any of those courses listed on any of the UC schools. I will be taking Calculus in my next semester but to finish all those requirements in 2 semesters will be extremely difficult. I do however fulfill their other requirements for basic core classes.

My question is for anyone who has transferred to any of the University of California schools or knows about their transfer admissions process. Are they very strict about their requirements that I should not even apply if I haven’t taken the courses they list? I also see some posts talking about only fulfilling the major pre-req’s, so I could use clarification on that.

My GPA is currently 3.91 and I have gotten A+ or A in all my CS and Math classes as well as an introductory non-calculus Physics class.

Classes I have taken so far:
Course - Course Name - Grade

CS127 - Into to Comp Sci - A+
CS135 - Software Analysis & Design I - A+
CS150 - Discrete Structures - Pending
MATH101 - College Algebra - A+
MATH125 - Precalculus - A+
PHY100 - Introductory Physics - A+
ECO101 - Intro to Economics - A
ENG120 - Expository Writing - A
FILM101 - Intro to Cinema - A-
HIST152 - US Civil War to Present - A+

Did you really have to list every A+ class? Some might call it excessive bragging. Good luck.

Cause not listing my grades would help people better understand my situation right.

Computer Science is a very competitive major at most (if not all) of the UC’s. I would say that having all of your pre-req’s completed is extremely important in order to get admitted. Is staying an extra 2 semesters at your current college an option?

Well, I got into UCSD for computer science with lacking science and math entirely. I hear that they’ve become more strict and that the major is now impacted as of Fall 2015, but I believe UCSD went purely by my GPA because I only had 1 prerequisite completed and that was a Java course. I had other computer science courses under my belt, but they did not meet the requirements. My counselor was even amazed that I got in and warned me I would be rescinded. I chose not to go and instead waited another year before I tried to transfer again. Anyway, since it does say that it is impacted now, I would try to get as many of the equivalent courses as you can handle without it becoming too stressful. I’m not sure what they value most, but for me it would seem like GPA because calc 1, 2, 3, and two hard science courses would equal 5 pre-req’s that I didn’t complete. I just had the 1.

I was hoping to stay for only one more year so I could do atleast two years of school in California but if I have to then yes it is an option.

Perhaps I may have a chance then, I am trying to take a summer calculus 1 course (Waitlisted atm). Then I will be able to take calc 2, linear algebra, and differential equations as well in the next year. The classes I do not think I will be able to take are calc based physics and chemistry. Not entirely sure why they are required for CS major in the first place.

It doesn’t really matter if you take 2 or 3 years to transfer, you would still be a Junior once you get to a UC, meaning you would have to do at least 2 years of school in CA.

Just make sure you are eligible and haven’t gone over the unit max, aka don’t take any upper division classes

Oh right I forgot about that.

I’ll be sure not to thanks.
