UC Berkeley vs. UCI vs. UCSD

Hello All!

I just received notification from my schools.

I have been admitted to UC Berkeley as a Spring transfer (2012) in the Economics program. (Letters and Science)

I have been admitted to UCI for Economics as a Fall Transfer (2012).

Lastly, I have been admitted to UCSD for Economics as a Fall Transfer (2012) (Sixth College)

With these being my choices, I ask for advice. My background includes being born in raising in Pasadena, CA and attending Pasadena City College for the last 3 years. I would like to know which school is rated best overall for Economics. My ultimate goal is to pursue corporate finance or investment banking, and of course attend Grad School.

Berkeley

UCSD and UCI don’t receive ANY recruiting at all for IB and only mild recruiting for Corp Fi.

Sincerely, the VP of the Undergraduate Finance Association at UCI.

If you want into IB, then THIS is what I suggest doing.

GET AN INTERNSHIP NOW, wealth management works just make sure it’s with a top tier firm(BAML, UBS, Citi, etc.) do that for a semester. This is very important, you want this ON YOUR RESUME. Big names are sought after. UCB is one, your WM internship is another(I’m suggesting WM as it’s easy to get into). If you can’t get in with one of these firms, look for a local firm to do a finance internship at of some form or another.

When you get to Berkeley, IMMEDIATELY BEGIN APPLYING FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIPS. Get something from as big of a name as possible. It doesn’t matter what you do, just get in somewhere well known. Fortune 500 or bust. Try to balance relevance with prestige. In addition to applying for summer internships, take on leadership roles in one or two clubs. I’d suggest one related to business and one that’s more recreational(it shows that you aren’t a robot). After that, try to take on more and more internships slowly but surely upgrading. during the NEXT summer, aim for internships with top firms, preferably one you’d like to do full time. If you aren’t hired on or want more, then during your FINAL semester, go crazy. Most firms recruit full time during the fall.

ohh also, GPA matters. IB and corp-fi like 3.5+ GPAs. They’ll often do a hard cut off on the shcool’s online recruiting system.
