Which school is the more prestigious university for undergraduate studies?
Cal is one of the top most prestigious is the country, if not the world. But a better question is, which school’s culture suits you? If you find the school that fits, you’ll have a much, much better collegiate experience.
And net price?
You’re premed.
Are you instate for UCB? If not, don’t go
Depends on the field. Cal Berkley generally carries more name recognition nationally and especially internationally.
As I said in another thread, prestige is like beauty; it’s in the eye of the beholder, and asking strangers about prestige when deciding where to go to college is like asking strangers who’s more beautiful when deciding who to marry.
I’m not really sure if prestige is comparable with these schools as they are so different. Berkley is definitely well known by everyone. However, everyone in the midwest is familiar with WashU, so they would be extremely impressed to hear you attended there. Also, the culture, student life, and campus of the two schools are completely different. If I were you, I wouldn’t decide just on prestige. Berkeley is right outside of San Francisco, which is one of the coolest cities. WashU borders STL city, U city, and Clayton. All of which are really neat. It’s also directly across from Forest Park which has the Science Center, Zoo (one of the best, free attractions in the nation), an outdoor skating rink, etc. Then, the loop is only a couple minutes away by walking, and that has restaurants and shops galore. Berkeley is also in an area of restaurants, but from what I gathered from my visit, and I may be wrong, WashU’s surrounding area seems much more trendy and (in some cases) higher end.

I’ve noticed that Washu has lots of premeds getting accepted into med school every year. I’ve also heard that many school artificially inflate these rates by having discouraging students with worse grades from applying. Does anyone know if Washu is one of these schools?

If you’re serious about going to med school (and I know that many premeds never go to med school), and if you’re OOS for UCB, then don’t go to UCB.
As for WashU’s numbers, it doesn’t matter what a school reports, it’s the students, not the school, that makes the difference.
Go where you will get the best stats, but don’t go to a Calif school if you’re not a Calif resident.
