UC Berkeley Waitlist Thread

^^^yes

@Ohm888 oh, that’s wird. Maybe when the essay comes to admission committees, it will be paragraphed.

@Weilan It bugged me to death because I like the flow of paragraphs. But it did that with your personal statements, no?

I remember someone telling me I could put / at the end of each paragraph so visually it would create that separation./So that is what I did./ I think they show up in admissions as one big blob unless something changed in the last couple years.

@Ohm888 I am not sure about / thing. There is no any instruction about making new paragraph. personal statements are nicely paragraphed.

I separate my essay into 4 parts but now it looks like all the parts are messed up into one…

How’s everyone feeling? Two more days til the deadline.

how did you guys approach the essay? I wrote two–one on why I love Cal and why it’s for me and one that was a more personal statement type piece. I ended up submitting the personal one that didn’t even mention Berkeley even once.

Hey guys, so I’m not on the waitlist, but I am appealing my rejection. There’s no appeal thread this year so I figured to post here. We hear back after the waitlist is cleared.

Is your guys’ essays the same where you have to introduce new and compelling information, or is it different?

@jonathaanv ours is pretty similar! it just says, “Share, in 500 words or less - anything we may not have already learned about you through your application”.

@eden97 oh ok I see. Well good luck to everyone who’s opted-in and waiting to hear back!

I know of a lot of people (small sample in the big picture) who got in and are going somewhere else. Hopefully there’s enough space for all of us who want to go!

@eden97 I tried doing both. (am trying still haven’t submitted it) I spend quite a bit of the essay talking about my own accomplishments while also trying to talk about how/why Cal is the school for me. Tough stuff.

@jonathaanv Hopefully that’s the case. On my end, people seem to be doing the opposite. I’m actually have happy that the protests, ect happened this year. Maybe enough people might be bothered by them that they choose another school? I doubt it’ll have much affect, but it doesn’t hurt to dream. Is the deadline for the appeal also tomorrow?

@Orangered123 I was actually going to mention that, but it’s a touchy subject for some. All this talk about defunding, antifa, coulter, milo, and rioting etc might be making people outside of the Bay Area kinda hesitant. That’s wishful thinking though (and kinda selfish lol). I could give a flying fuuuuuuuuuuuuuck about all of that, I love cal, the Bay Area, and want to stay home.

About the deadline. I honestly don’t know. It originally was May 15 and we should hear back by June 15, but I checked the FAQ and now it says June 1st and we should hear back by July 1st. I submitted my appeal already and it kept the original June 15th date so idk it might be a glitch

To be considered for any spaces that may become available, you must opt-in no later than May 15, 2017. However there is no specific timing, does that mean by tomorrow night?

@Sean1995 In the FAQs, they wrote that the deadline was 11:59 pm PDT on May 15th.

@Orangered123 Yeah, it’s tough /: I was leaning toward my Cal focused essay at first but changed my mind last minute because I thought it would give them something different after reading what will be hundreds of very similar “Why I love Cal, I belong at Cal” essays haha. Well, good luck!

Just finished the opt-in form. I hope they actually read those essays because I spent way too long on it. Also, I have a friend who got in my same major and they just turned down Cal for UCSD, so hopefully that bodes well for some of us lol

My essay is a combo…I talked my courses in spring semester, a little bit about what I did after submitting application. And then I focus on adding a personality of myself (because I think that’s what I lake in my original essay). In the last paragraph I talk about how UCB fit me and how I am attracted by it. Exact 500 words…

Another waitlisted student here.

I just finished the opt-in form too. To complete my essay, I initially looked over my original application again to discover specific reasons why I lacked to be admitted as an applicant. After that, I listed all my weaknesses up based on my discoveries, and tried to give some additional information to justify why I am the right person to be at Cal. In my view, one of my major weakness point is why my major (mathematics) is essentially required for my ultimate career path, so I spent more than 250 words to show why I chose mathematics for my major, and described why I need it. Of course, I ended up my writing with my recent activities; I just addressed my grades that I earned in last quarters–maintained a 4.00 GPA-- since I have nothing special to point out lol.

Good luck to you all!

Yo just submitted my waitlist opt-in. I know the chance is low so I’ve mentally prepared lol Good luck to everyone tho :-bd

So worried about this. I’m praying that the transfer waitlist is like the freshmen one where around half the people who join it are accepted off it.

Hey folks, is mentioning that I’ll be receiving multiple associate’s degrees this spring something worth putting in there? Or is that something that Cal wouldn’t care about/irrelevant?
