UC Berkeley's College of Engineering? Or College of Sciences?

Hi, I want to apply for Berkeley's College of Engineering but it requires a SAT Science Subject Test Score and mine is a mere 670. Should I go the safe route and apply for the College of Letters and Sciences which does not require any science subject tests? Or should I just go for it YOLO and apply for engineering with my low score?

another option is to take the SATII again. whether or not it would matter if you raised the score 50 points is entirely dependent on other factors, such as state of residency, GPA, SATI, other SATIIs, ability to pay, etc.

So if you are accepted to the College of Letters and Sciences do you plan to accept and eventually transfer to the College of Engineering? If so this is not a good plan. You may find that transferring is very difficult.

You wont get in to CoE with the low score, check previous years, I think usually in the 800.
Are you planning to study with CS?

DrGoogle: I want to do bioengineering (CoE) or just regular biology (CoL&S) ><.

I would do biology if I were you. Why do you want to do Bioengineering? For jobs?

DrGoogle: I’m interested in engineering but I also like biology. I plan on applying for medical school after undergrad, so I thought Bioengineering would be a good undergrad major for applying for med school. And if I don’t get into med school, it’s not a bad major to fall back upon? But based off of my science subject test for Chemistry, I don’t really know anymore aha.

Thanks for the advice…

@DrGoogle if sat SCIENCE subject scores are only “recommended”, do you think I could just not submit it and still apply for CoE?

Bioengineering is really not that great major to fall back on. My daughter knew this guy at USC with that major but he is now tutoring Math and Physics. No engineering job. Also it’s hard to get good GPA with that major for medical school. BTW, this student was admitted to USC BS/MD program so he was pretty smart, also a trustee scholarship recipient. But his undergrad GPA was not high at all so he is not in medical school.

For engineering you need one math and one science. Do you have another science subject?

yes, there might be an overabundance of unemployed BioE majors out there. On the other hand, there’s a lot of unemployed or underemployed Bio majors, too. You might want to reconsider a major where it would be easier to double major, or a related major of some interest to employers such as math (and bio?) or computational biology.

@DrGoogle Shucks, I would really like to get into medical school. Is biology easier to maintain a good GPA then? And nope, I don’t have another science subj. test, but I believe UC Berkeley only recommends a math and science submission and does not require it. So I could just submit my math score. But even that’s a lousy score ahaha (720).

I thought only CoE wants sat subject test scores, you don’t need to submit it for L&S. My friend’s daughters study math and 2 got into medical schools and one was investment or trading.
