Shrinkrap has it right. I don't know what firefornia is talking about.

Im not arguing what the requirements are for financial independence.
I know how difficult it is.
That does not mean I do not know what the requirements are.....

I established residency in CA, and did benefit from substantially lower tuition. However, I worked for a year in CA and paid for my own apartment and living costs. Then I applied and was accepted to a CA university. I was younger than 24, as you are, and it took some doing. I wasn't able to afford OOS tuition even with working in that first year, so I didn't even bother looking at whether or not I could have changed my residency status, but I do believe you have to do more than just "stay in CA for the summer" which part of me thinks you are interpreting as being a way to go about it.

Also hmom tends to post valid and realistic posts, as do some of the others posting here. So if I were you I would perhaps ask the financial aid offices themselves rather than interpreting the website. i.e ask them directly if the plan you have worked on for so long is a good one.

I am truly very glad I went to school in CA, but I lived there prior to attending school and after (had attended a university in VA for a couple of years prior to moving..so I was 20 when I moved there and 21 when I established residency and applied)

Thank you for your input 3321.
I only stated that I am moving to CA next month so that I can begin to establish my residency.
I know it will not be until sophomore year until I am even qualified just for the 366 days.
But I know what the other requirements are and I plan to fulfill all of them.

The only thing mom was misinterpreting was the Under 24 policy.
3321 is proof that you DO NOT have to be 24. Anyone 18 and older can petition.

I do not mind paying OOS tuition for a year(presumably).
UCSB is second in the nation for Marine Biology and UCI has a great science program.
It is worth it TO ME.
And that is all that matters.
If I can get into USC(which is my FIRST choice though a REACH) I will definetly go there because of the AID they can give me and my family.
But like I said, I have planned this before hand and I am ready if( I am not granted admission to USC) to gain residency for tuition purposes.

"I do not mind paying OOS tuition "

That is good to know....but i was under the impression you said the GOVERNMENT ( that means me) was paying. I want to know why...Even when you start paying your state taxes ( I think that was what one of criteria ), it'll be awhile before YOUR paying.

"UCSB is second in the nation for Marine Biology and UCI "

I MAY not disagree here, that I'm getting my moneys worth, but that takes us back to your chances. UCD and UCSD have a specific point driven formula that will come closer than a chance thread to giving you an answer, although this year might be very different that historical point cut offs. UCSB and UCI may have a point system too.

Here's UC Davis

UC Davis: Admission Criteria

okay, i promise, I'm through.

I trust that your dad hasn't claimed you for a year or so at this point? That is also key to establishing independence (in addition to proving you can support yourself, have an apt/job etc).

Correct.
My father has not claimed me.

Vote republican Shrinkrap.
Matter of fact, vote Ron Paul.
I don't like the current system either.
Trust me.

well you'll be in at riverside. i just got accepted and your scores are better than mine

I hope so.
I've been checking my UCR everyday since the first.
Still no admission decision.
