I was wondering how many students that get accepted into Davis are invited into the honors program. I cannot seem to find any numbers anywhere. Does anyone know?
@ihatethis123 it doesn’t seem like nearly as many as schools like UCI and UCSB. Looking through information from previous years, it looks like most of the honors recipients are also Regents.
Somewhere I read that it is 200 which seems really low. My son was accepted into Honors and we are trying to determine the value of it (other than monetary.) For example, I understand that class sizes are smaller but this cannot be true for upper division classes??? My son is Computer Science so if you spread the 200 Honors students among different majors it does not make sense. Also is there a value to him butting this on his resume or for grad school? Thank you.
@ProjectByeByeKid did your son get both Regents and honors? I’m trying to figure out if they admit any honors without Regents.
I think it is probably a resume booster if you can graduate with honors. I read on another thread (maybe UCI???) that a lot of honors kids do it for the first couple of years to get priority registration and then drop it when they get into upper division classes. I’m not sure how much truth there is to that.
@lkg4answers I was admitted into honors without Regents.
Thanks @ihatethis123 Congratulations!
@lkg4answers He received Honors without Regents. Not sure why anyone would drop Honors for upper division. I must be missing something. Thanks for the info!
Hi all, a quick question. I got into UC Davis. Can I opt into Honors program or is it by invitation only?
@Ash017
Invitation only.
Freshman can be admitted into the program if they are invited, apply, and are accepted.

@Panduhr thank you so much. I did not get into UC Davis honors. But U Pitt has offered a substantial aid as well as Honors. There is no guarantee even if I apply during the first year and work hard, I may get into Davis Honors. Also, its the first 2 years where it will be most important to get priority enrollment etc apart from the great group of students I will be with in the Honors housing etc.
Any one any comments or advice regarding this?
How were your notified that you had been accepted into the Honors Program? Was it in your email? Letter?
coming out of the woodworks to help some potential aggies out!
@ihatethis123 Honors is offered to the top 5% of applicants to UC Davis. At least that’s what it said in the brochure when I was admitted (2014). Could probably do some math from there. In the end though there will be about 200 that will live in the honors dorm building.
@ProjectByeByeKid Congrats on your child!
- I believe the course list is tailored to how many people in a certain major there are so there is less of a problem of not gathering enough people to make a class. 1st and 2nd years are forced to take UHP-restricted courses every quarter after all. Generally the 2nd year is when people begin to take upper-division courses though - and the honors course list can be not as accommodating to certain majors, therefore some drop out of the program for more freedom of choice in courses.
- The last 2 years of the honors program are devoted to research projects and the like, things that can be done by students not in the program. Graduating with departmental honors can be achieved without being in UHP as long as the student achieves the required GPA and a senior thesis. Also by the time your child is in their 3rd year, they would have accumulated enough units to not necessarily need the priority registration anymore.
- I would say it would look good on his resume. For every year of being in the program there is also transcript notation. I remember my mentor also said to note that I was in the honors program when interviewing with professors for research positions.
@Ash017 If money is a problem you should go with UPitt.
@amykristie should have went along with offer of admission.
@facadence Thank you for the information. When helping my son determine where to go, knowing that he will be equally happy at Davis and UCSD, I see the choice coming down to which program will be best when applying for his first job and/or grad school. Not sure that Davis Honors adds much to the discussion other than the possibility of better internships at Davis.
@facadence thank you for the comment. I have decided to go to UC Berkeley this fall as a pre med.
