UC Davis transfer chances/TAG chances for Fall 2016?

Hello CC. I am a community college student who is hoping to qualify for TAG to Davis next fall
stats:

GPA: 2.9
Intended Major: Cell Biology
Extracurriculars: Co-President of a club, Volunteering at a local hospital

I can attribute my low GPA to the classes I took during HS at the local CC. I earned B’s and C’s in those classes. At the time I didn’t even think they’d be counted towards transferring to Davis but they do, and it was an unexpected setback I hadn’t anticipated. I did not do so good my first official semester at the CC, but this year I have done much better (scoring 1 A and 2 B’s). My GPA for the course groups on their website for Math. Chem and BioSc are all 2.5+. I plan by the end of the Fall and Spring semester to get all A’s.

What are my chances?

From http://tag.ucdavis.edu/students/faq.cfm

"Fall 2016 minimum requirements for a TAG must be completed by the end of summer 2015, prior to your planned fall 2016 enrollment at UC Davis:

  • 30 UC-transferable semester (45 quarter) units
  • 3.20-3.30 overall GPA (dependent upon major)"

I’m sorry, but a 2.9 will not qualify you. Is there any way you can take summer classes to boost your GPA?

Agree with luckie, although they only calculate UC transferable, so if any are not transferable courses recalculate your GPA without them.

I talked to my counselor about the classes I took while in Highschool and I was told that those classes, even though they were taken in highschool, will still transfer over even if they are not a part of my major. Without those classes my gpa would be higher.

I don’t really have any other classes to take towards my major in the summer that will boost my GPA for my major. I will look into it though

Sounds like Davis may not be the right school for you. Have you considered other options?

If you can’t raise your GPA, don’t waste your TAG on Davis.

Look though here: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf to see if you qualify for any

Also, as lindy said, look though your catalog and see if all classes are UC transferable. Also, put your grades in her https://uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu/students/index.cfm and see what you get. Thats the website you’ll use if you submit a TAG

A 2.90 will qualify you for TAG at UCM in the School of Natural Sciences, which I’m guessing your major is a part of. TAG there (unless you can raise your GPA via summer classes, which you should seriously consider), and then shoot to get into Davis.

You should SERIOUSLY take summer classes if your GPA is indeed a 2.90 and all of your old courses are transferable. That could qualify you for Davis (not a definite, of course you’ll have to calculate everything to see if you’ll have a high enough GPA). You do have Merced to fall back on, though, which is good.

Hello, I am also a current community college student wanting to transfer to UC Davis for Fall 2016 through the TAG program.

Current GPA: 3.85
Intended Major: International Relations
Extracurriculars: Nothing except I worked as a babysitter from 4 am til 8 am for two semesters and took mostly night classes; I ran into some issues so I wasn’t able to take many classes during my first year.

I can speak, read, and write in Polish (it’s my native language) and I am currently teaching myself Japanese, French, and German, don’t know if that helps at all but hahah oh well!

I received A’s in History, Spanish, Statistics and Probability, Political Science, TV, and then one B in Microeconomics.

I applied to Davis back in high school, I was waitlisted for International Relations and then rejected (the rejection didn’t stop me from trying to get in a second time haha) so I was wondering if this time I have a better chance of getting into that major?

In high school I did pretty good, got straight A’s and did a ton of volunteering all of high school but my SAT/ACT scores weren’t the best.

It says that you need to have 30 transferrable units to apply for TAG. I have 21 units right now, but my AP exams gave me 18 units so technically speaking I have 39 units. Do the units I received from my AP exams count towards the 30 required to apply for TAG? If not, that’s fine I will do the regular application process and see next April if I got in however I would love to be able to get in on the TAG program since it has been my dream school for a couple of years now. I really really want to go there so I hope this time is my chance to go!

Also, I won’t be able to finish the required 4 semesters of Spanish, I will be able to finish 2 or 3 of them, is that a big deal when applying or will I be able to finish them once I transfer? I did 4 years of Spanish in high school, don’t know if that helps at all.

I am fine on units, I will have 66 units (100 UC Quarter Units) total once I finish CC (AP Exams included), so hopefully it isn’t too much of a problem for getting accepted into the major.

Thank you to anyone who replies!!
p.s. sorry it is so long I just haven’t been able to talk to counselors at school and even when I do, they don’t answer my questions that well so I am trying to research as much as I can on my own

@mumu12 you really should start a new thread.
