Hi, I'm a biology major and I've been accepted to University of San Francisco (USF), UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Merced & UC Riverside. However, I've been rejected by the 2 UC's which are closest to where I live. Berkeley is 25 minutes away and Davis is 40 minutes away. The problem I have is that I battle an anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder even though I'll be 18 this summer, my separation anxiety has never been healed. Because of this, I need to go to school near home so that I can have the option of coming home whenever I need to. I have a 3.8 UC GPA & a horrible SAT score (1600) however, my anxiety did take a toll on how I did in school. I want to appeal to both Berkeley and Davis and explain my condition. Do you think I have a chance at a successful appeal? Please let me know!

I doubt the appeal will be successful but never hurts to try. USF and UCSC aren’t that far away…you could go home on weekends.

@UCBChemEGrad why wouldn’t the appeal be successful? I have a valid reason…it’s not like I’m bitter about rejection, I actually have a reason.

Lots of people appeal and very few are successful. Did you not mention or discuss your situation in your essays? Usually only new info is considered for appeal.

@UCBChemEGrad actually I never mentioned having an anxiety disorder… Or having intense separation anxiety.

If the appeal doesn’t work, you could attend a community college close to your home and then reapply to UC Davis and Berkeley as a junior transfer student.

@UCBChemEGrad no offense to transfer students, but I’ve worked extremely hard in high school. 6 AP classes, 3 honors, etc. I think I deserve to go straight to a 4 year university I just hope this appeal works because I have friends with far lower GPA’s and SAT scores than me who have gotten into Davis and Berkeley.

Ask your guidance counselor to call them and plead your case. They may not believe a student.

BE PROUD you got accepted to four UC’s with a 1600, including UCSB. I know you want to go somewhere close to your home but it’s either CSU’s or you move out. But like you said, if that’s really not an option, then I guess appealing is your best chance.

I got a 1620 on my first SAT and I’m planning to retake it without a doubt, my goal is to get into either UCLA, UC Davis or UCSD. If things turn for the worst, I’ll take the lower UC’s like you did.

GOOD LUCK on your appeal though, if you can be descriptive of how your anxiety attacks interfered with your education, they’ll accept it, but you can always go to a community college and reapply in two years like UCBChemEGrad said.

“If things turn for the worst, I’ll take the lower UC’s like you did.”

Santa Barbara cannot be considered a lower UC. Its in the middle with Davis. I don’t know how OP got accepted to UCSB with 1600. Here’s a list to give you an idea:
TOP UC’s
- Berkeley
- Los Angeles
- San Diego

Middle UC’s
- Santa Barbara
- Davis

Low UC’s
- Irvine
- Santa Cruz
- Riverside
- Merced

Actually Davis is tied with San Diego right now so 3. San Diego/Davis :/

^I wouldn’t say that as Davis and Santa Barbara have equal stats although looks like Davis has gotten very competitive this year.

I would rather bring San Diego down to middle than pull Davis up.

I would score it differently

Berkeley/UCLA top tier

Davis/San Diego second tier

Santa Barbara/Irvine third tier

Santa Cruz/Riverside 4th tier

–

UCLA and Berkeley have an international reputation–the other dont.

I kind of deal with something similar, and I’m probably going to a school that ill only be able to go home on the weekends. Maybe you should try looking into a school you got accepted to that will allow you to do that. The way I look at it, maybe that will push you to overcome your anxiety disorder but you still won’t be so far away that it’s impossible to go
home

Plus you got accepted to some good schools. It be ashame to miss out on going to them

Y’all are hilarious…my friend got into Davis with a 1300 SAT. Davis isn’t that great. UCSB is waaaaay better and more competitive

*Low UC’s
- Irvine
- Santa Cruz
- Riverside
- Merced*

UCI is not a lower UC. It’s in the middle.

Davis is a very good school.

You can’t really look at one student’s test score and acceptance to make a determination about any UC. The UCs weight GPA more heavily to give students from “bad” K-12 districts an edge. Also, a student’s intended major (fine arts with portfolio, performing arts, etc) may have been a hook.

I’m not sure, but UCs may “forgive” those with lower SATs if English isn’t their first language. If so, then GPA may be given even more weight.

isnt it too LATE to appeal?

I would concentrate on Davis.

Your SAT scores are way too low for Berkeley.

If I were an admissions officer at Davis, however, I would see that you got into some comparable schools, so admitting you would not be a stretch.

I agree UCI belongs to the middle tier. However, I would not want to go to UCB with anxiety disorder. Check out the looney bin thread. I think UCB will bring it out more. Just my 2 cents.
