i saw that uc davis dropped down and is below uc irvine and santa barbara according to us news 2006. i got into davis and irvine and really wanted to go to davis but am disappointed by its rankings. do you guys think they are pretty much the same? is sb and irvine higher because it is in a better area so there is more of a demand for them? i just want to get opinions on whether davis is the right place to go. thanks.

if you really like davis, then go there. the difference is minimal.

Yeah, college isn't necessarily about ratings, it's about what fits you.

UC Davis fell in the US News and World Report 2006 Rankings because of a reporting error in the percentage of faculty holding terminal degrees.
http://www.dateline.ucdavis.edu/dl_detail.lasso?id=8402

UCD, UCI, and UCSB are all great and so close in the rankings that you don't even need to think about it. Among public universities, UCD is 14th, SB is 12th, and Irvine 10th. That being said, I think UC Davis is underrated. The reporting error cost UCD a couple spots, so I'd say UCD is around the 11-12th category as of today.

I see UCD moving up next year and in the future for a few solid reasons: private donations are very important to the US News Rankings and UCD is gaining a ton of alumni $ in 2006 for the '07 rankings and future years to come. Another big point is that UC Davis is transitioning to D1 athletics this year for 2007. A ton of $ for the university will come from the move to D1 (football = big money; UCI and UCSB don't have football.) UCI and UCSB maintain their rankings right now already having the benefit of performing at D1, so this new money will be a huge advantage for UCD.

In the end, go to the school that feels best. UC Davis should move into the top 10 shortly due to the revenue created by D1 and the chance to spend those dollars to better the athletics dept., expand the campus, conduct research, etc. I'm deciding between USC, UCD, UCSD, and UCSB and if I had to commit today, I'd say UC Davis for the true college town experience. Go Aggies!

thanks so much everyone! wow everyone on here is so nice and helpful.

the difference between davis/irvine/sb is very very minimal in regards to rankings. The campuses themselves are quite different. Dont worry about the rankings, in this case because the three schools are very similar. Choose the campus that fits you best. I would, however, advise you, if you were admitted to sd, la, or berkeley to choose one of them, however they are slightly more difficult to gain admittance too.

Did you get into UCB/UCLA/UCSD?

I'm a student at UC Berkeley, but considered Davis a strong second choice. When I visited, I really enjoyed myself. For some reason, I get a more intellectual vibe from Davis, in comparison to UCSB and UCI. However, all three are wonderful institutions. I do believe that Davis is a underrated university. Yet, I've found that the general public does respect the school, and great things come out of the place. Give it 5-10 years and I honestly think Davis could/should overtake UCSB, UCI and possibly even UCSD as the third best UC. I don't know why, considering I'm not a student, but I highly recommend UC Davis. It's a school on the move, for sure.

Anyway, good luck!

<3,

Izzie Bear

well i didn't get into ucsd or ucla sadly. it's weird b/c my friend has a lower gpa and sat scores than me (not that mine are anything great at all) but she still got into ucsd. i'm not too disappointed though. from reading everyone's posts i think i'll stick with uc davis. it's really close to where i live too so it seems like a good choice overall. thanks to everyone for their opinions sooo much! and good luck to all of you guys as well

i think davis is underrated also.. well visit the schools and see what you like =) total college town.

I got into davis and san diego (not LA or Berkley)

and I cant really decide between the two

"the difference between davis/irvine/sb is very very minimal in regards to rankings. however, advise you, if you were admitted to sd, la, or berkeley to choose one of them,"

this is really tearing me apart
(my major = biology)

bio! deffiantly sd

You would be shooting yourself in the foot if you didnt pick SD.! SD SD SD!

UC Davis is a great school and it would be the flagship in probably 45 states.

agreed. i'd rather go to davis.

UCD has already surpassed UCSB. And soon it'll pass UCI And hopefully UCSD

I don't know, if you're not going to go to Berkeley or maybe UCLA, might as well go to the most pleasant location, Santa Barbara, right on the water. Davis is a good school, but it's a little bit drab. Great choice/location if you're really into skiing. A lot of Davis students get season passes and cabins in tahoe, less than 2 hrs away.

Funny, the one UC that has seemed to drop quite a bit is Santa Cruz. The rising one is clearly UCSD.
