I was just wondering, do you guys think that Davis is starting to become a competitor for the #3 spot in the UC system? If you really start to look at the recent statistics US News has UCD and UCSD ranked at 38, tied for third place in the UC Rankings. Then the acceptance rates of the two schools UC Davis is only accepts 4% more of its applicants compared to San Diego, but that might be because the institution is larger correct? They are both strong in sciences....I just wanted to know your guy's opinions.

Bump? Just interested to see opinions

UC Davis is in the middle of farmland. UCSD is near one of the coolest cities in the West. That fact alone makes UCSD a very popular choice.

Ranking is really subjective. Pick a school for what you want to do, the environment you like, etc.

Forget about whether one school might be a bit more highly ranked. In the end, it is all rather meaningless. It won’t matter 20 years from now.

UC Davis also has a larger endowment, and is the largest UC in terms of size. (It’s like 5x the size of UCLA I think.) It even has its own airport.

USNWR aside, I think UCD still has a long way to go. For example, it hasn’t had any faculty that’s won the Nobel prize yet. UCSD on the other hand has a ton, over twice as many as UCLA does. (Although i’m pretty sure UCLA has more alumni laureates than UCSD.)

UCD is a fine university. Only time will tell whether it’s able to take the #3 spot from UCSD however.

That’s because it’s the agricultural UC. It needs the land to train its students.

I still think many more students would prefer to be in San Diego than farmland, regardless of how good a school it is.

UCSD has the stereotype of being one of the least socially vibrant UCs. Davis is a complete college town that revolves around the school. Although more students might prefer San Diego to Davis, i don’t think that means that they’d prefer UCSD to UCD.
